Coffee shops, canals, bikes, and so much more await you in Amsterdam. A city trip for the weekend is a welcome change to escape daily life and gain some new experiences. Today, I will show you how you can discover not only hidden places but also save cleverly.

A metropolis and melting pot of cultures with the coziness of a village - this exciting contrast makes Amsterdam so fascinating. But the bustling city in the Netherlands can be quite expensive due to its popularity. Museum visits, canal tours, concert tickets, and attraction tickets can add up quickly-after all, you want to have some experiences. The adventurous prices can often complicate your planning. Well, let me tell you, you can also experience Amsterdam completely for free. Doesn't seem possible? Think again!

To be honest, it's not about checking off all the expensive attractions on your bucket list; rather, it's the magical moments that arise from conversations and encounters with the people around us that make our stay unforgettable. This is what traveling is all about. Therefore, make sure to explore Amsterdam away from the tourist hotspots and mingle with the locals. Today, I will show you how you can have an exciting time in Amsterdam for free.

Free Classy City Tour

Amsterdam, with its 800,000 residents, is a relatively small capital, so compact that you can easily reach almost everything on foot. An exciting city with a village character! The great thing is you can soak up the vibe of this trendy city completely free while strolling around. Discover beautiful highlights and charming cafés inviting you to linger as you roam the historic city center. Amsterdam's picturesque buildings are scattered throughout the city. It seems that the Venice of the North, with its romantic canals and fairy-tale merchant houses, has sprung from a museum. If you're interested in the city's history and specific attractions, you can join a city tour with Sandemans New Europe. Strictly speaking, the pay-what-you-want walks aren't completely free, and a small tip is appreciated - but it's not mandatory. A window-shopping stroll along the busy shopping street Nieuwendijk-Kalverstraat has its charms as well. Observe the stylish residents of Amsterdam and let their sense of fashion inspire you. Then you can shine with the latest trends back home.

In my travel magazine, you will find a fantastic city walk to the sights in Amsterdam. My route will take you to the city's prettiest spots.

Jordaan - A Jewel in the Heart of Amsterdam

Amsterdam Market

You shouldn't miss the artistic and student district of Jordaan, as it is more authentic and less touristy than the center. Here, you can spend countless hours strolling through the narrow alleys lined with ancient trees, admiring the romantic gabled houses. Be sure to turn into the little side streets, follow the canals, enjoy the tranquility, and watch the boats relaxing on the canals. Especially at twilight, when the lanterns light up the houses, the neighborhood is perfect for a breathtaking walk.

Experience the local life in Amsterdam's weekly markets in a fantastic way without spending a cent. You should definitely consider the particularly atmospheric Noordermarkt. Here, locals buy fresh delicacies for the weekend, and delicious scents will entice your senses. Watch as the artistic neighborhood slowly awakens on a Saturday morning and the morning hustle and bustle breathes life into the city.

Did you know that Amsterdam has more canals than Venice?

Explore Amsterdam for Free from the Water

What would the Venice of the North be without its canals winding uniquely through the streets of Amsterdam? A canal cruise is, of course, a special highlight, but it will cost you at least $15. However, if you still want to experience the charm of Amsterdam from the water, you can follow the locals' lead and use the free ferry. It crosses the IJ and takes you to the northern part of the city. Ferries leave every few minutes from behind the Central Station, where you can let the wind blow through your hair. By the way, the ferry docks at Eye, the film museum. Here, you will also find one of the famous I Amsterdam sculptures. It makes for the perfect backdrop for your next Instagram snapshot and is more personal than any postcard you could buy. The advantage of this sculpture: it is definitely less overrun by tourists compared to the statue in the city center at the Rijksmuseum.

Amsterdam Noord - Hipster Hotspot and Scene District

If you want to soak up some hipster atmosphere, you can jump right into exploring the trendy neighborhood of Noord right after the ferry ride. It's not as crowded as the attractions on the south bank of Amsterdam. The former problem area is slowly becoming the new hipster enclave and awaits you with creative flair. In the now-defunct NDSM shipyard, a unique building with high ceilings and industrial charm, many studios and galleries have settled down. It's impressive to wander through the hall with its dizzyingly high ceiling, where the roof, wood, and steel structures always creak and rattle, and creativity just seems to be in the air. Here, unknown artists display their works. Who knows, maybe you'll meet the next Van Gogh here?

Spectacular View

Enjoying Amsterdam from above is a special highlight. However, instead of spending your money on expensive entrance fees for a viewing platform, you can also take in the view over the rooftops of Amsterdam completely for free. The library is just a stone's throw from the central station and yet a hidden gem on the waterfront - not only free but also worth seeing. The library already enchants visitors with its bright, light-filled halls. Modern architecture meets the classic scent of books and the soothing silence - a particularly appealing combination. However, the view surpasses everything. With the elevator, you can reach the enormous rooftop terrace and enjoy the impressive panorama with the harbor and the romantic city center of Amsterdam. My tip: The library is open until 10 PM, so you should schedule your visit for the evening when the setting sun bathes the skyline in a mystical red hue - an absolutely breathtaking moment.

Park Idyl - Relaxing in the Green

If you are longing for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, you will find it in one of the many parks. Of course, all the green oases are free to visit. Instead of strolling through the famous Vondelpark, I recommend visiting Sloterpark, away from the tourist crowds. The best way to explore the green oasis is by bicycle; after all, the park is a full 90 hectares large. Amsterdam is the city of bicycles, so you can rent them on every corner. What Bed & Breakfasts are in London, Bed & Bicycles are in Amsterdam. My tip: If you stay at the Bicycle Hostel, you can even rent bikes for free with a stay of 4 days or more. If you prefer a cozier option, you can also find comfortable accommodations on Airbnb that will also offer you bicycles. Of course, you can explore the park on foot or engage in other wonderful athletic activities. After all, you need to burn off the Frikandel, fries, and croquettes. Jog the winding paths or swim a few laps in the Olympic swimming pool - especially in summer, it's a refreshing break. A particularly fun activity is the Frisbee Golf course, which is designed similarly to a traditional golf course but is played with Frisbees.

Evening Events in Amsterdam

Amsterdam Night

In summer, people love to spend time outdoors, and it's even better when there's free entertainment involved. For several years now, an open-air festival called Pluk de Nacht has been held during the summer months. Independent films that aren't shown in every cinema are screened here. Despite its growing popularity, the festival has managed to maintain its cozy atmosphere. Spend a carefree evening cuddled under a blanket while enjoying a picnic. With a good film, a bottle of wine, and some bread with Dutch Gouda in your basket, you can romantically relax under the clear starry sky. Is there a more beautiful way to spend a balmy summer evening? This year, Pluk de Nacht will take place from August 16 to August 26.

If you're more in the mood for music than films, you can immerse yourself in Amsterdam's music scene. Especially during the week, there's a wide variety of live gigs. Listen to the sounds of jam sessions at Mulligan's Irish Bar or let Alto Café take you into the world of jazz. Rock fans will also be well entertained in Amsterdam, as Maleo Melo regularly hosts free concerts. Or, you can spend a fun evening in the previously mentioned Vondelpark. The Amsterdam Vondelpark Festival will take place this year from June 4 to September 10. Every weekend, Dutch and international dancers, artists, musicians, and bands entertain the audiences on an open-air stage - the perfect way to spend a leisurely Saturday or Sunday in Amsterdam.

Beer Tasting

Have you ever wanted to know how the Germans' favorite malty beverage is made? Then you absolutely must visit a brewery in Amsterdam! Many probably first think of the Heineken Brewery, but the tour at this famous brewery costs a whopping $16. Therefore, consider visiting the Bierfabriek Amsterdam as an alternative. It may be less known, but the beer here tastes incredibly delicious, and the interactive tour is really worth it. Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 3:30 PM, the tour begins. While this experience isn't entirely free, the $5 fee is worth it, as you can taste the freshly brewed beers in the dedicated tasting room right on the spot. You can also admire Europe's largest beer bottle collection here. A must for every beer lover!
