Know Before You Go - The Bahamas

Want to gather more information about the land and people before planning your trip? Here are some valuable tips for you. Read everything you need to know about entry requirements, infrastructure, and more.

  • Geography: The Bahamas is an island nation in the Atlantic, located southeast of the United States and northeast of Cuba. Geographically, they belong to Central America and consist of over 700 islands and 2,500 cays.
  • Passport & Visa: As a U.S. citizen, you will need a passport valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry to the Bahamas. For touristic stays of up to 90 days, you do not need a visa, but you must possess a return or onward flight ticket. Important: If you are entering via the U.S., for example through Miami or Atlanta, the travel and safety advisories of the U.S. apply. You can find more information in my article about entry into the U.S..
  • Capital: Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas located on the 33-kilometer-long island of New Providence. It is by far the most populous city in the Bahamas with nearly 250,000 residents and is one of the top tourist destinations alongside Grand Bahama, the Exumas, and the Abaco Islands.
  • Vaccinations: Travelers from yellow fever regions must present proof of a valid yellow fever vaccination upon entry starting from their first birthday. However, there are no required vaccinations for direct entry from the U.S., but the U.S. State Department recommends checking and updating standard vaccinations according to the current vaccination calendar from the Robert Koch Institute (e.g., tetanus, diphtheria, etc.). Important information regarding travel vaccinations can be read in my travel magazine.

  • Currency: In the Bahamas, you pay with the Bahamian Dollar, abbreviated as BSD. However, you can also use U.S. dollars and credit cards in many places. 1 BSD is currently about 0.86 USD.
  • Time Zone: The time zone is four hours behind UTC, so you need to account for a six-hour time difference during Daylight Saving Time and a five-hour difference in Winter.
  • Language: The official language in the Bahamas is English.
  • Infrastructure: The Bahamas enjoy good infrastructure thanks to well-developed air and sea traffic. To travel from one island to another, you can conveniently use domestic flights and boat services. On the islands of New Providence, Grand Bahama, and some others, there are also well-developed roads-but be careful, as the traffic is left-sided in the Bahamas.
  • Cuisine: The Bahamas offers a delicious and highly varied cuisine with many different flavors. Many dishes are influenced by Creole and African traditions. Particularly popular are seafood and fish dishes, including the famous conch, as well as meals with rice, sweet potatoes, and black beans.
  • Best Travel Time: The most popular time for a vacation in the Bahamas is from December to April, though the Bahamas, like many other Caribbean locations, are a popular year-round destination. Detailed information on the best travel time in the Bahamas can be found in my travel calendar.

Stranded in Paradise

Approaching the Bahamas

After weeks of excitement, the time has finally come: I'm heading to one of the most beautiful places in the world, the Bahamas. The nearly 4,700 miles and about 12.5 hours of flight that separate me from my dream destination do not deter me-I'm actually getting quite comfortable on the plane and mentally preparing for my vacation in paradise. I'm surprised because Delta Air Lines offers all its passengers not only a variety of in-flight entertainment but also a Free Messaging Service, allowing you to use WhatsApp for free throughout the flight. There are also warm meals, snacks, and hot and cold drinks provided. Nothing stands in the way of a relaxed flight.

A layover in Atlanta and a few movies later, landing is approaching. Just the view out the window of the long, white sandy beach below me and the turquoise sea leaves me speechless. Wow, just as I imagined! Or is it even more beautiful in reality than in the pictures? I'm in love from the very first moment.

My journey first takes me directly to the exclusive Sandals Royal Bahamian in Nassau on New Providence Island. The ride from the airport to the hotel is a highlight in itself, as the shuttle driver infects me with his pure joy of life and tells me a bit about the islands and casually mentions the favorite drink of the Bahamas - Bahama Mama. Caribbean music plays in the background, instantly putting me in a vacation mood.

Wow, just as I imagined!

The Bahamas consist of over 700 islands and 2,500 cays, of which only about 30 are inhabited. With a total of 16 islands offering vacation options-unless you can afford a private island like Johnny Depp-choosing can be quite a challenge. Grand Bahama, the Exumas, Paradise Island, or would you rather go with New Providence? You have a tough choice ahead.

As mentioned at the beginning, my first stop is the coveted main island New Providence, the so-called historical heart. Once you arrive, you will immediately notice what makes the most populous and 33-kilometer-long island in the Bahamas so special. On one hand, there are the dream beaches, like Cable Beach, Cabbage Beach, or Jaw's Beach; on the other hand, the vibrant activity-especially in the lively capital, Nassau. Let yourself be caught up in the Caribbean vibe, stroll through the colorful streets of Nassau, and marvel at the architecturally impressive colonial buildings.

After that, you can either relax on your private hotel beach or visit one of the stunning beach sections on the nearby Paradise Island, where you'll find the world-famous Atlantis Resort. This resort is not only the largest in the Bahamas but also houses the largest underwater aquarium in the world, a massive casino, and has even been a filming location for a James Bond movie. You can reach it by taxi or ferry within 15 to 20 minutes. Plan to spend at least half a day or even a full day here to fully enjoy your time-after all, you're at the foot of a five-kilometer-long beach. But be careful: since Cabbage Beach is quite popular, it can get a bit crowded here. Just follow the beach eastward, as the areas further away from the Atlantis Resort are often quieter.

I'm already amazed by the myriad impressions, but my next destination can hold its own as I head to the next Caribbean paradise. Exumas, here I come!

Exumas - The Place to Be

If you ask locals which is the most beautiful place in the Bahamas, you will probably get the same answer: the Exumas, an archipelago consisting of over 360 cays, primarily known for its two main islands, Great Exuma and Little Exuma. You could almost say they are the counterpart to New Providence, as everything here feels a bit more pristine. Untouched beaches with the finest powdery white sand, an incredibly colorful underwater world, and not to mention the swimming pigs are typical of the Exumas, which also include some private islands, one owned by Johnny Depp and David Copperfield among others. No wonder, with such dreamlike views!

I'm taking a small propeller plane to Great Exuma. And what can I say? The approach to the Exumas surpasses everything I've seen so far. The water, the nature-just the overall picture-I'm so happy and can't wait to make my way to my next accommodation and see more of this beautiful island. I'm not sure what I should do first: snorkel, take a boat ride, or simply bask in the Caribbean sun?

The approach to the Exumas tops everything!

Since I'm lucky enough to experience two beautiful islands, I am, of course, also enjoying two fantastic resorts in the Bahamas. My first days are spent at Sandals Royal Bahamian in Nassau and the rest of my time at Sandals Emerald Bay on Great Exuma.

While one provides the perfect mix of sightseeing and relaxation, the other is the perfect retreat for couples and those seeking tranquility. However, they share one thing in common: luxury is a top priority at both accommodations.

If you choose one of the popular Sandals Resorts in the Bahamas, you can benefit from many amenities thanks to the all-inclusive package offered there, leaving you with almost no expenses on-site. In addition to extensive dining options, various water sports are also included in the price.

If you're looking for a unique accommodation that promises a mix of vibrant island life and luxurious vacation, then the Sandals Royal Bahamian is the perfect choice. While the bustling capital Nassau, just a few minutes from the hotel, invites you to sightsee and shop, the elegant rooms and bungalows-some with their own hot tubs, stunning beaches, and a small, private island accessible only to hotel guests-offer relaxing hours in paradise.

Active vacationers won't miss out here either: a gym with a stunning sea view, snorkeling trips, sailing tours, and more provide plenty of entertainment. Ten specialty restaurants, eight bars, and seven pools complete the offering. A night in a standard double room starts at around 240 USD per person.

Would you like something even more exclusive, or perhaps are you spending your long-awaited honeymoon in the Bahamas? Then there's no better resort than the Sandals Emerald Bay in Great Exuma, which is only 40 minutes by plane from Nassau. This luxurious hotel is especially geared towards couples and is the perfect place to unwind in a picturesque setting. Fun fact: This hotel even hosted a romantic Dream Date for The Bachelor two years ago.

From cozy suites to classy beach villas with your own butler, everything your heart desires is here. Eleven gourmet restaurants featuring delicacies from around the world, six bars, five pools, an award-winning 2,700 sq. meter spa, and a wide range of land and water sports as well as a private championship golf course are all included. Prices start at around 290 USD per person per night.

Variety of Activities

But there are also plenty of activities on land. How about a golf course? photo by www.urlaubsguru.de

With so much luxury and inviting dream beaches, the recreational offerings are, of course, also plentiful. But don't worry, there are plenty of activities on the Bahamas as well. Snorkeling, diving, windsurfing, jet skiing, parasailing, stand-up paddling-all of that and much more is available at nearly every beach. Personally, I decided to start with a traditional snorkeling excursion in Nassau to see the colorful underwater world of the Bahamas with my own eyes.

Long before getting into the water, I'm already blown away-you can't imagine how unbelievably clear and bright blue the water is here! I can hardly get enough of these wonderful colors and am unsure if I should pull out my camera or just enjoy the moment. Just a few minutes later, I'm diving into this dream of blue and am amazed, for directly beneath me lie impressive reefs and countless colorful fish. I snorkel on for an hour, floating along and observing parrotfish, emperor fish, and whatever else they are called. I can only say here: You must see it with your own eyes! But let it be said, this was just a small taste of what's to come.

On Great Exuma, I test out the sports offerings on land. Tennis, beach volleyball, golfing-there's a lot to choose from in regards to land activities as well. I opt for a golf lesson taking place in the most beautiful surroundings. I'm not sure what impresses me more-driving the golf cart around the lush course or the enchanting view of the sea in the background. After a few tries, I actually start to enjoy this sport, though I personally would prefer to dive in this heat. So, it's settled. The next day will be: Next stop, Pig Beach!

Next stop, Pig Beach!

But of course, I must admit that I-and I think I speak for all participants-have been eagerly awaiting a very special stop: The swimming pigs on Big Major Cay. When the guide tells us we're just a few minutes away, my heart starts racing. Finally, I see them, live and in color. And indeed! We head toward Big Major Cay, and there come some of the curious piglets paddling toward us. At first, I'm totally stunned, not only because of the breathtaking scenery but also due to the size of the animals.

I slowly venture into the water, but I hold back a bit. Because once they sense you have some salad and bread (which you should never bring with you alone, but only be given by the tour provider), they come quite close and snap at the food. However, as long as you are careful and keep a safe distance, you can enjoy your time peacefully here and take many great snaps. Each of those cute animals has a name that you can find from the signs on the beach, where the pigs also take breaks from sunbathing and have a little midday nap in the shade. Somehow it all feels so surreal: swimming pigs on the beach, right in the Caribbean! I believe this day will stay in my memory forever.

After nearly 40 minutes that feel like they flew by, we sadly have to say goodbye. The tour is slowly coming to an end, and before we go, we want to visit the iguana island. A great conclusion to an unforgettable tour! I'm still speechless.

Are You Ready for the Caribbean?

And now, let's be honest: Did I promise too much or are you just as in love with the Bahamas as I am? After my visit, I can completely understand why so many people rave about this dream destination over and over again, and why it's one of the most luxurious destinations in the world. The nature is just breathtaking, the offerings incredibly diverse, and of course, the resorts are insane. I'm quite certain I will return someday... If only to explore even more beautiful places while island hopping, to dive into the underwater world again, and to tell you even more about this dream destination in the Caribbean. How about you-are you ready for the Caribbean?
