Ballermann - this word definitely conjures a very specific image for everyone: A place where parties happen. Both during the day at the beach and from early afternoon in the many bars and pubs along the famous 'Shinkenstraße.' We associate Ballermann with a lot of alcohol, buckets with colorful straws poking out, columns bubbling with mixed drinks, and many party-loving people. With lively pop songs, good vibes, and a spot where countless people spend an unforgettable short trip every year. Spain's beautiful island Mallorca is also known for many as the ultimate party mecca. Ballermann has shed its image - and that's exactly why it is so popular with us Germans.

Where is Ballermann in Mallorca?

What many of you might not know is that Ballermann 6 is actually not a beach but a venue. The six-kilometer long beach of the island's capital Palma de Mallorca, Playa de Palma, is divided into sections by 15 such venues. Venue number 6 - now called Beach Club SIX - marked the most famous Balneario among us Germans, Ballermann 6, which has become imprinted in our memory as a party mile from El Arenal.

Behind the beach promenade, numerous hotels, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs line the Playa de Palma, competing for the favor of vacationers with promotions, happy hours, and other deals. The most famous party mile, however, is just behind the beach of Ballermann 6, just a few steps from Beach Club Six: the notorious Shinkenstraße.Megapark, Oberbayern, Bierkönig - the names of the large party institutions at Ballermann are even known to those who have never been here. It almost seems as if Ballermann is a kind of German cultural heritage that one simply must know. And in a way, it is - after all, Mallorca remains one of the most popular vacation destinations for Germans. While Mallorca is not only about Ballermann, it is - and this cannot be denied - still one of the island's hallmarks.

Drinking binges with sangria from buckets right at Playa del Palma, cheap German beer, non-stop music, and well-spirited promoters advertising typical Ballermann events, such as all-you-can-drink parties and appearances by Mallorca celebrities - that's what Ballermann 6 stood for a long time, and that's exactly why the crowds loved spending their short vacations in El Arenal. However, for the locals of Mallorca, who initially welcomed the paying party crowd from Germany, the events at Ballermann have now become an eye sore.

Are there really behavioral rules at Ballermann?

In May 2014, the authorities reacted for the first time to the ever-growing criticism from residents and implemented strict behavioral rules for Ballermann. Drinking binges and unrestrained parties were to be completely curtailed; Playa de Palma was designated as an intervention zone, and fines of up to €3,000 for violations were common. Of course, this is initially a shock for those who come to Ballermann specifically to party. But we can reassure you: The partying still continues, even though it's not as wild as it was with Tommy and Mario in the movie Ballermann 6.

Since the introduction of the rules, you have to forgo 'bucket drinking' on the beach, but in the bars and clubs, you can party and drink to your heart's content, which still makes this beach section a popular party destination, just as it has been for decades. The influx of tourists remains unbroken even despite the behavior rules; Mallorca is still very much in trend, although low-budget destinations like Bulgaria with their sun and golden beaches are now also attracting a kind of 'Ballermann tourism.' But true fans still swear by the original!

Since early 2020, a law has also been enacted against excessive drinking behavior on the island. Here are all the rules summarized again:

Prohibition of alcohol sales in supermarkets from 0-8 AM

Prohibition of excessive alcohol consumption on the beach

Prohibition of 'bucket drinking'

Outside of meal times, it is prohibited for hotels to serve alcohol to guests.

Only a maximum of three alcoholic drinks per person are allowed during lunch and dinner.

Each additional alcoholic drink must be charged individually.

Popular offers such as happy hour, 2-for-1 and all-you-can-drink are no longer allowed in many regions and hotels in Mallorca.

Large events such as conferences, meetings, or weddings with at least 20 guests are exempt.

Prohibition of 'balconing,' which forbids the dangerous act of climbing from balcony to balcony and jumping into the pool from a balcony.

Compliance with the law is strictly controlled by local and national police as well as the Guardia Civil. Tourists who violate the law can face fines of up to €60,000.

Here is where the alcohol ban applies in Mallorca:

Playa de Palma (Ballermann) -> from Palma Aquarium in the west of the island to El Arenal in the east.

Only a few streets in the town center of El Arenal are affected.

Magaluf -> entire urban area except for a new housing development near the beach promenade and the Cala Vinyes settlement.
