Bryce Canyon in Utah
Spectacular Views and a Natural Amphitheater
If you're exploring the Southwest of the USA, you must visit Bryce Canyon National Park. Here, you will find an almost fairy-tale landscape unlike any other. Colorful rock spires rise from the ground, forming a very unusual and unique natural monument, while numerous viewpoints and exciting activities provide one of the most beautiful experiences of your trip to the USA. I promise!
When Americans are asked about the most beautiful sight in the Southwest, alongside the famous Grand Canyon, the name Bryce Canyon undoubtedly comes up. The impressive images of the national park are frequently seen - the spectacular sunsets and the naturally formed rock spires and bridges are certainly the most popular photographic subjects. I have taken a closer look at this fantastic national park for you and can already promise: After reading this article, Bryce Canyon will surely land at the top of your bucket list!
Bryce Canyon National Park
The Formation of a Natural Amphitheater
Bryce Canyon is not a classic canyon in the traditional sense, as it was not formed by a river, but through erosion. Its existence is due to the interplay of wind, water, and ice, which also created the uniquely shaped, colorful rock spires. These spires, known as 'Hoodoos', rise up to 60 meters in height, forming the most attractive part of Bryce Canyon - an amphitheater that supposedly formed over a period of more than 10 million years. Even today, the forces of erosion regularly change the exterior of Bryce Canyon.
On particularly sunny days, when the colors of the various spires, created by iron oxide and manganese, shine in different shades, this amphitheater shaped by Mother Nature takes on a fairy-tale quality. The sight is hard to put into words; you simply have to see it with your own eyes.
Fantastic Viewpoints
Directly at the amphitheater are the four most popular of the 14 viewpoints in Bryce Canyon National Park. Connected by the Rim Trail, which runs along the plateau edge, you will find Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, Inspiration Point, and Bryce Point. From each of these points, you enjoy a fantastic view of the colorful amphitheater with its countless spires. I highly recommend taking a short hike along the Rim Trail, which - depending on how many viewpoints you stop at - takes between two to three hours. If you don't have enough time for that, you can also cover part of the Rim Trail by shuttle bus, though I would definitely prefer the first option, as the views along the way are simply priceless! It is said that the best sunrise can be experienced from Bryce Point and, as the name suggests, Sunrise Point, while the sunset is best viewed from Sunset Point.
However, the other viewpoints are no less impressive. From Fairyland Point, which is located along the beautiful Fairyland Loop Trail, you get a great view into Fairyland Canyon. Equally popular is Agua Canyon, especially known for its strong color contrasts. Here, you often find small trees on the Hoodoos, affectionately called The Hunters. A wonderful sight!
If you still haven't seen enough and have enough time, you should also visit the Natural Bridge, a naturally formed rock arch in the southern part of the park. Again, no flowing water was responsible for this impressive formation, but rather the eroding forces of frost and rain.
My personal tip: To capture the most beautiful views of your excursion on camera, you should set out early in the morning. In the early morning or late morning, you have the best light for photography, and with a bit of luck, the park is not too crowded yet, as most tourists with booked excursions arrive around noon.
Popular Activities in Bryce Canyon
As you might have guessed, there's not just plenty to see in Bryce Canyon National Park, but also plenty to do. You definitely shouldn't just focus on the viewpoints but also take in everything around. One of the most sought-after and impressive ways to explore the park is certainly through a hike in the canyons. Well-marked trails of various difficulty levels guide you past imposing limestone sculptures that look as if they've come straight out of a fairy tale.
I particularly recommend the Queens Navajo Combination Loop - this trail takes you from the famous Sunset Point down the Navajo Loop and back up to Sunrise Point via the Queens Garden Trail and is especially suitable for beginners. In contrast, the slightly more challenging Fairyland Loop is a little over 10 kilometers long, leading through Fairyland and Campbell Canyon and around Boat Mesa. In general, different trails in Bryce Canyon can be easily combined so that even during a three- to four-hour hike, you can see plenty. It's best to get a trail map at the Visitor Center beforehand or book a guided hike; the choice is yours.
In addition to numerous hikes, there are several other activities that attract tourists from around the world. For example, there's summer stargazing, where you go on an unforgettable night adventure with trained rangers and can admire spectacular star clusters, galaxies, and planets through a telescope. On nature and wildlife tours, you can also marvel at the great flora and fauna of Bryce Canyon. More than 200 bird species, 70 mammals, and 13 reptiles now call this place home - a fantastic tour for young and old! Equally good is a guided horseback riding tour, where you can feel like the Native Americans did around 12,000 years ago.
Yes, a day trip here is hardly enough to learn all the facets of Bryce Canyon. For this reason, if you're considering taking several days to hike through the entire national park from north to south and don't necessarily want to camp in the park itself, I recommend one of the three accommodations directly at Bryce Canyon:
- Best Western Plus Ruby's Inn - a nice, rustic 3-star hotel right at the park entrance
- Best Western Plus Bryce Canyon Grand - a modern 3-star hotel, just 1 km from the entrance to Bryce Canyon
- Bryce View Lodge - a simple but popular 2-star hotel
