One might think Avatar meets Tarzan as they observe how the green lily vines wind their way through a cave opening down to the surface of the water. Sunbeams penetrate deep beneath the water's surface, illuminating the path for divers into the depths of the cave system.

A cenote is an open karst cave, primarily found in Mexico but also in the Dominican Republic. In recent years, cenotes have become absolute Instagram hotspots, as the unique atmosphere inside the cave systems creates particularly fascinating photographs. Many divers and snorkelers stop here during their trip through Mexico and the Dominican Republic to observe these formations up close. The Maya are said to have used many cenotes as sacred sites and viewed the underground systems as gateways to the underworld.

A cenote develops in so-called karst areas, which are particularly common in Mexico. The unique open cave shape is created by a hole in the grotto that allows both sunlight and fresh water to enter, or by the collapse of the ceiling. Depending on its formation and characteristics, each cenote has its own distinct look-some resemble large open lakes, while others are small, winding, and eerily beautiful. Many of the caves are also interwoven with waterways.

Over time, the edges of most cenotes are richly adorned with vines, creating a mysterious atmosphere inside. Plants and animals also find an extraordinary habitat here.

Now you might be wondering where the cenotes are hidden and how to get there. That's why we put together a small selection of the most beautiful cenotes in Mexico. You will surely be amazed! A small tip: Many of the caves have now become real tourist attractions-similar to the Mayan site of Chichén Itzá, it's worth arriving early to avoid the crowds. Bring a towel and be careful when descending into the underworld; it is often slippery due to algae-covered stones.

For example, the well-known Grand Cenote, which is often crowded. The Casa Cenote is quite different; it is completely open and surrounded by tropical mangroves. Further north, you'll find the Dos Ojos Cenote, where you can dive with professional divers for thrilling experiences at the bottom of the cenote. It's simply enchanting how the light breaks in the turquoise water.

If you follow the coast a little further north toward Cancun, you'll reach the small village of Xpu Ha. In addition to Cenote Abierto and Jardin Del Eden Cenote, you'll discover a truly special bathing paradise: Cenote Azul actually shimmers in the most beautiful shades of blue, as the name suggests. Among the many rocks in the shallow water, you'll surely spot some colorful fish while snorkeling. The pool is surrounded by adventurous nature, creating a jungle vibe!

For our next tip, you'll need to travel a bit, as Cenote Yokdzonot is located 100 kilometers from Mérida and 65 kilometers from the charming town of Valladolid. However, this seclusion is definitely a benefit: here you usually enjoy a bit more peace than at some other caves. Look forward to an open, sunlit waterhole where you can beautifully swim in the dreamlike turquoise water. Many wooden stairs lead you down, from which you can already enjoy breathtaking views.

Deep in the darkness of a rock cave lies Cenote Samulá, where the sun also filters through small holes and makes the water sparkle. Right next door is Cenote Xkeken, which is no less beautiful. And the best part: if you'd like to visit both, you can get a combo ticket. While the two cenotes are located a bit outside, you'll find Cenote Zaci right in the heart of the city.

Not far from the famous Chichén Itzá, another cenote has found its home. After sightseeing at the Mayan site, you can cool off by jumping into the deep blue waters of Cenote Ik Kil. Meter-long roots and vines from the green-covered rocks hang down into the depths from the edge of the cenote. It can quickly get crowded here, as many tourists like to take a little break after visiting the sights. So, try to arrive early to enjoy the calm before the storm.
