The three uniquely shaped peninsulas of Kassandra, Sithonia, and Athos jut into the Aegean Sea like fingers, which is why they are often referred to as the 'three fingers of Greece.' Not only the wonderful bathing beaches and the turquoise sea but also the many trendy beach bars, enchanting hotel complexes, and a wide range of diverse outdoor activities make a vacation in Chalkidiki so unique and varied. To give you an idea of what to expect on this peninsula and which highlights you shouldn't miss, here are the best Chalkidiki tips for an unforgettable vacation in the land of the gods, sunny Greece.

Getting to Chalkidiki

The peninsula of Chalkidiki, located in northern Greece, is best reached via the international airport in Thessaloniki. After about a 2.5-hour flight from cities such as Düsseldorf or Berlin-Tegel, you will arrive and usually feel the intense heat as soon as you step outside, especially during the hot summer months. It's time to quickly grab your luggage and head towards the sea, where the warm temperatures are much more bearable. If you haven't booked a package tour with a transfer included, take bus line 78, which usually runs every half hour to the nearby bus station. From there, numerous intercity buses can take you to various holiday spots in Chalkidiki. The price varies between about $8-$15 per person, which is still significantly cheaper than a taxi that can cost around $100, even after negotiations.

Kassandra, Sithonia & Athos - The 3 Fingers of Greece

As mentioned, the southeastern peninsula of Chalkidiki is characterized by its unique shape, resembling a hand with three fingers. These so-called 'three fingers of Greece', which the Greeks like to call 'feet', are named Kassandra, Sithonia, and Athos.

Kassandra

Kassandra, the first narrow finger, is marked by seemingly endless sandy beaches, expansive pine forests, olive groves, and small hills from which you can enjoy breathtaking views of the stunning blue sea. Here, you can find some of the most beautiful resorts, the majority of hotels in all of Chalkidiki, and plenty of fantastic water sports options, more on that later.

Sithonia

On the second finger, Sithonia, things are a bit different. Here, we speak more of a calm beauty, as Sithonia seems a bit quieter and remains less developed for tourism than Kassandra. Nevertheless, there are also wonderful places here that invite you to linger. Particularly the hills rising up to 800 meters dominate the magnificent landscape of this neighboring peninsula. Secluded bays and beautiful campsites allow for a relaxing vacation in the midst of stunning nature. Hikers will also find plenty to enjoy here, discovering some hidden sights along the way.

Athos

The third and easternmost finger is Athos, named after the holy mountain Athos, which rises 2033 meters from the Aegean Sea. Athos is mostly an autonomous monk republic and is unique worldwide. Many beautiful monasteries can be found here, which can be visited from the water via boat excursions. However, access is only granted to pilgrims who wish to visit some of the holy sites and who have applied for a special visa long in advance, while women are not permitted to enter this area at all. The slightly hilly interior of Chalkidiki, often referred to as the palm of the hand, is absolutely worth seeing, but it is characterized more by its agricultural environment than by tourism. The interior is particularly well-suited for hikers, adventure seekers, and cultural travelers, as it features some wonderful cycling and hiking trails, as well as several interesting archaeological sites and historical hot springs. Chalkidiki offers more than just beautiful beaches - it's an excellent destination for combining a beach holiday with various outdoor activities and plenty of sightseeing.

Diverse Chalkidiki - Excursions, Action & More

It is no wonder that Chalkidiki is often referred to as the 'green garden of Greece.' Hardly any other Greek region is as varied, so green, and perfectly suitable for active vacationers as this one in the north of the country. Picturesque beaches and small coves alternate with uncharted natural landscapes, while the Greek way of life and rich cultural history create unforgettable moments.

Hidden Mountain Villages

Those wishing to explore more of this magnificent region, discover the most beautiful, yet also the most secluded and often very natural areas, should embark on a little sightseeing tour. For example, a full-day trip through the hinterland of Chalkidiki to some of the hidden mountain villages and mountainous landscapes far from the tourist resorts is an excellent choice. If you prefer to cover most of your long distances on foot, a hiking tour through Sithonia would be ideal, as this peninsula is particularly picturesque. Pine forests, rugged coastal landscapes, and well-maintained hiking trails promise an unforgettable hiking experience with stunning views - including the holy mountain Athos. Should you wish to view Mount Athos and the eponymous third finger up close, you can book a boat excursion towards the Athos coast, where you can either admire the many monasteries of the monk republic from the water or, with special permission, even visit them on-site.

Action and Fun

For those of you who prefer water sports over sightseeing, you will find plenty to enjoy in Kassandra, as it offers suitable activities for every water sports enthusiast, ranging from water skiing to sailing, paragliding, and surfing. The latest trend is Flyboarding, a water sport where you are propelled through the water by the jetstream of a jet ski using a Flyboard, allowing you to shoot through the water like a dolphin - both underwater and up to 10 meters above water. In general, it can be said that Chalkidiki, especially for fans of various outdoor activities, remains a very popular destination even in the fall. During this time, temperatures often drop to below 30 degrees Celsius but are still pleasantly warm and therefore perfect for wonderful outdoor excursions like hiking or mountain biking. Many visitors also come here to enjoy a carefree vacation at one of the many beautiful campsites.

If you ever feel like doing a bit of sightseeing and shopping in between, we highly recommend the wonderful port city of Thessaloniki, which is absolutely worth seeing with its white tower, archaeological museum, and architecturally impressive churches, including the famous Agios Dimitrios. Individual tourists particularly like to rent affordable accommodations here to explore many of the sights in this significant cultural city just before departure, stroll through the shopping passages, and enjoy a lively evening in one of the many beautiful bars right by the harbor.

A Culinary Paradise for Food Lovers

Anyone who has been to Greece at least once knows that this country is a true paradise for every foodie. Cozy tavernas with wonderfully fragrant, typically Greek dishes make it nearly impossible for hungry vacationers to simply walk by - so it is in Chalkidiki. The scent of fresh fish is too enticing for tourists, who are often willing to forgo the delicious buffet at their hotel.

Tempting Little Taverns

So here's our tip: An all-inclusive vacation isn't always necessary; sometimes a package tour that includes breakfast is enough. Usually, it is too hot to eat more than a light snack in the afternoon, and in the evening, the traditional tavernas are simply too tempting. Once you settle down in one of the many tavernas, which truly don't make the selection easy, you'll likely be pleasantly surprised by the relatively low prices. Despite the crisis, prices for a delicious grill platter with souvlaki, gyros, and bifteki including salad range from $8 to $10 depending on the restaurant, which isn't too much considering the often beautiful seafront locations. As an appetizer, enjoy a freshly prepared tzatziki with a piece of bread and a large, freshly drafted Mythos beer or a tasty Greek wine - and your dinner is perfect.

Fish lovers often treat themselves to a delicious sea bream with lemon or even Gavros, small fried fish. If you prefer a quicker meal, order a typical Greek pizza topped with ham, olives, bell peppers, and hot peppers. While this dish is relatively more expensive than at home, its unique flavor makes it worth it. For those preferring a vegetarian dish, we recommend a stuffed pepper, which many tavernas will prepare without minced meat, served with baked potatoes and some feta cheese, making for a delightful meat-free meal. And do save some room for dessert, because instead of ouzo, which you often get in Greek restaurants as a complimentary drink, you will receive a piece of cake or similar dessert in Greek tavernas.

Warm Summer Nights and Lively Parties

The nightlife in Chalkidiki primarily takes place in the many bars, which offer a stunning view of the sea thanks to their beautiful beach location. As soon as the Greeks have their last meal late at night, it's time for many to enjoy a carefree summer evening. In the dark, beautifully illuminated, the many bars begin to fill up from around 10 to 11 PM. Before that, there's hardly a reason to go out. Whether in Hanioti, Polichrono, or Kallithea - in nearly every bustling resort there is plenty of excitement, especially in the summer months. If you want to dance after enjoying a glass of Greek wine or one of the cocktails, you will quickly find a place in Kallithea or Hanioti, as both resorts have several trendy clubs. A similar scene can be found in Neos Marmaras on the second finger, Sithonia. If the selection here isn't large enough, hop on a bus to Thessaloniki early enough and prepare for an unforgettable night, as the second-largest city in Greece is bursting with nightlife options. The neighborhoods of Ladadika and Kastro are particularly recommended, as they are the center of the nightlife.
