Best Things to Do:

Why the U.S. State is Definitely Worth a Visit

Colorado is colorful, diverse, and absolutely worth a trip. A look into my report will show you how fascinating and varied a vacation in beautiful Colorado can be.

Colorado in the USA

The breathtaking nature of Colorado leaves you speechless. Magnificent national parks make the heart of every nature lover soar, while the impressive mountain landscapes invite hiking, climbing, and skiing. If you're looking for an adventurous vacation amidst stunning nature, this is the place for you. But those seeking relaxation also get their money's worth in the endless expanses of Colorado. It's no wonder that Colorado, located in the central and western parts of the United States, is considered the most diverse state in the entire USA.

Breathtaking National Parks

When you think of Colorado, the Rocky Mountains often come to mind first. From the famous Rocky Mountain National Park, you have a beautiful view of the folding mountain range that stretches across North America. But it's not just the stunning views that lure you into Colorado's breathtaking national parks. A fascinating wildlife and plant world, picturesque rivers alternating with hilly landscapes, and deserted places inviting you to dream - this is what you can expect here. Once you set off in Colorado, you definitely don't want to miss the impressive natural backdrops. The following four national parks exist in Colorado:

  • Mesa Verde National Park (1906)
  • Rocky Mountain National Park (1915)
  • Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (1999)
  • Great Sand Dunes National Park (2004)

Hiking, Camping & More

Let me say one thing upfront: adventurous travelers will feel right at home in Colorado. With so much beautiful nature, it's clear that there's plenty to experience. It's the proximity to the Rocky Mountains, which have over 50 peaks and extensive plateaus, that creates ideal conditions for exciting hiking routes throughout Colorado. For example, you can hike from one lake to the next, enjoy impressive views of the surrounding mountain landscapes along the way, and take a break at historically significant sites. A moderate hike of about 2 hours would be the one from Maroon Lake to Crater Lake, where you can gaze at the fascinating peaks of the Maroon Bells along the way.

It becomes a bit more challenging on the Booth Creek Lake Trail, which can take a good 4 hours depending on your fitness level and leads you to an elevation of over 900 meters. A definite highlight on this route is the popular Booth Falls waterfall. Do take breaks along the way, as especially the last part of the hike is relatively rocky and steep. From easy to challenging, there is definitely the perfect route for every hiking enthusiast in Colorado. Especially in autumn, when the temperatures become more pleasant and the leaves display their most beautiful colors, a hike in Colorado is highly recommended.

If you're in Colorado for the first time, I especially recommend a guided tour along the various trails with an experienced guide, which is great for beginners of hiking and mountain biking.

If you're drawn to Colorado during the winter months, you should certainly not miss the unique skiing experience amidst the Rocky Mountains. Popular ski resorts include Vail, Telluride, and Beaver Creek. Climbing enthusiasts will also find heaven in the expansive Eldorado Canyon State Park, as the park, located south of Boulder, is among the top three climbing areas in the entire USA.

Another alternative to experience the U.S. state at its best is by mountain biking, as there are also some exciting trails, especially the famous Colorado Trail. Here you can cycle through the picturesque landscapes and wilderness of Colorado, passing impressive red rocks and unique cactus deserts. Routes over Denver and Durango are particularly popular here.

A special experience is a camping vacation in Colorado. This way you can easily drive from one national park to the next, make spontaneous stops with exciting hiking or mountain biking tours, and conveniently set up a tent to camp in this breathtaking nature. What more could you want?

Special attractions during a road trip with an RV through Colorado include:

  • Rocky Mountains
  • Maroon Bells
  • Pike's Peak
  • Rifle Falls
  • Garden of the Gods
  • Manitou Cliff Dwellings
  • Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre
  • Devil's Causeway

Visiting Denver and Colorado Springs

When you're in Colorado, you should definitely visit the charming capital, Denver, located at the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains. Due to its elevation of about 5,280 feet above sea level, Denver is often referred to as the 'Mile High City.' With more than 600,000 residents, it is the largest metropolis in the state and has a lot to offer. Starting with the panoramic view from the terrace of the gold-plated dome of the Capitol, to the exciting Denver Art Museum at Civic Center Park, to the beautiful Denver Botanical Gardens - you will surely not get bored here. In the famous botanical garden of the city, where a wonderful floral scent will greet you, you can admire more than 30,000 subtropical and tropical plants on over 9 acres. With its nearly 200 parks and an average of 300 sunny days a year, it's inviting to simply stroll through this charming city, visit one of the numerous museums along the way, and take a little break in a cozy café now and then. Since many tourists arrive via Denver International Airport, the city is also the main gateway for various excursions, as well as for many surrounding ski resorts in Colorado.

Located just about 70 miles south of Denver is the second-largest city in the state, Colorado Springs. This city is not necessarily known for its sights, but rather for its stunning surroundings. Insiders even refer to it as 'the most beautifully located city in North America.' Set against Pike's Peak, the fascinating mountainous scenery is undoubtedly one of Colorado Springs's main attractions. On a clear day, from the summit of Pike's Peak, you can see as far as Denver to the north and the Rocky Mountains to the west. The 600-acre nature park, Garden of the Gods, is also worth a visit, offering interesting hiking and biking trails from which you can admire the impressive red rock formations and the beautifully green landscape.

3 Things You Can't Miss

In brief, here are three things that you absolutely must see or experience in the U.S. state of Colorado:

  • Camping in the National Park - sleeping outdoors is in trend!
  • Indian Summer in Colorado - simply breathtaking!
  • Visiting the Wheeler Geologic Area rock maze - a real insider tip!

Of course, this was just a brief glimpse into the diversity and beauty of the impressive U.S. state of Colorado. There is so much more to see and experience that one report is simply not enough. For my part, I can say: Colorado, you beautiful piece of land - I'm in love. How about you? Have you perhaps been to Colorado yourself and have more tips to share?
