Denpasar - Bali's Capital

The City of Markets Will Impress You

Whether you're backpacking or on your honeymoon, Bali is in high demand. Between island hopping and pampering at a luxury resort, make sure to plan some time to visit the capital city, Denpasar. Why? You'll find out here.

"You should take a trip to Denpasar" is often said when discussing plans to travel to Bali. But why exactly? Just because it's the capital? Not quite. Rather, it is both the economic center and an incredible city in the south of the island. In English, Denpasar means 'New Market,' and you'll be rightly amazed at the extent of markets awaiting you here. Additionally, the cityscape is characterized by a series of temples, rice terraces, and significant palaces that represent Bali in its original form. So it's a must for every Bali visitor, don't you think? Before you allow yourself to be pampered from head to toe in a luxury villa in Bali, a mandatory visit to Denpasar should be on your agenda!

Markets as Far as the Eye Can See

Let's start with what you definitely won't miss: the largest market in the city, Pasar Badung. Divided into two four-story buildings, your sense of smell will be awakened upon entering, with a true potpourri of aromas from Eastern spices, fruits, and vegetables gently enveloping your nose. Both day and night, the doors are open for you to browse to your heart's content and immerse yourself in Indonesian life. Let the fine silk fabrics enchant you, and perhaps buy a traditional sarong as a memento. Not only at Pasar Badung will you find a wide selection of fabrics and jewelry, but stores of this kind are densely packed together, showcasing their goods. You will also find a different kind of market at Pasar Burung. This is a bird market - yes, you read that correctly. You will see all kinds of birds here, and accessories for pets are also available for purchase.

Palaces and Temples in Denpasar

To truly get to know Denpasar, you must also visit the magnificent temples and palaces of former rulers. Foremost is the Jagatnatha Temple, dedicated to the island's highest god. Equally impressive, and of great historical significance, is the Puri Pemecutan Palace. After nearly complete destruction in 1906, it was rebuilt and today commemorates the uprising against the Dutch. The city's centerpiece is known as Puputan Square. At the center of the square stands a huge statue of Bhatpara Guru, the god of the cardinal directions and the most important god of all of Bali.

But there's another intriguing feature awaiting you: alongside richly adorned palaces and temples, you will even find (and the emphasis is really on just one) Catholic church. Imagine this in a way that combines characteristics of both Balinese and Christian faiths, resulting in what one might call a bizarre image. Angels, for instance, wear the traditional sarong - even if the concept seems unusual at first, it's beautiful to see two religions intertwining.

Bali Arts Festival

Depending on when you're in Denpasar, the city knows how to shine with a very special highlight. The Bali Arts Festival takes place annually, showcasing dancers and musicians from around the world for a month-long celebration of art. This year, the festival will run from June 13 to July 11, 2020.
