Khao Lak - A Vacation Under Coconut Palms
When is the Best Time to Visit Khao Lak?
As temperatures in Germany slowly but surely continue to drop, travelers to Thailand can enjoy abundant sunshine at temperatures up to 30 degrees Celsius along the Andaman Sea. The water here is even bathtub warm. Is there a better place to escape the cold of Germany? The months from November to April are considered the best travel time for Khao Lak, as you can expect many sunny hours and temperatures up to 35 degrees. You can find more information about the best time to visit Khao Lak in our travel calendar.
The Most Beautiful Beaches in Khao Lak
One of the most famous and beautiful beaches in Khao Lak is Pak Weep Beach, known for its fine white sand and palm-fringed scenery, which is popular among both tourists and locals. Another great advantage of Pak Weep Beach is its vastness, allowing you to easily avoid other visitors if you prefer some peace. If you enjoy a livelier atmosphere, you can also visit the popular White Sand Beach, which is seamlessly connected to Pak Weep Beach.
If you have booked a hotel or resort in the center of Khao Lak, Nang Thong Beach will be the beach you can reach most quickly. Although it is considered somewhat more touristy than Pak Weep Beach, it still boasts great space and numerous restaurants and snack bars where you can try delicious Thai cuisine after a day at the beach. To find your personal favorite beach in Khao Lak, we recommend taking a leisurely walk along the shore, as you'll certainly have no shortage of breathtaking, expansive beaches. With a total length of about 20 kilometers, everyone will find their favorite spot. During such a walk, you'll also get to know your vacation destination better and can choose a restaurant or a small street food stall for the evening.
Our little insider tip is Khuk Khak Beach in the north of Khao Lak. Here, there are only a few hotels and restaurants, meaning the large tourist crowds are absent, and you can enjoy the fine sand of the beach more or less to yourself.

Excursions & Attractions in Khao Lak
If you need a little variety from the beaches in Khao Lak (if that's even possible), we recommend taking an excursion to the region's attractions. You can explore these on your own or take completely organized tours and day trips-whatever suits your sense of adventure at the moment!
Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park & Ton Chon Fa Waterfall
The Lam Ru National Park covers an area of 125 square kilometers. Unlike other nearby national parks in Thailand, Khao Sok and Khlong Phanom, you can reach Lam Ru National Park after a short drive on your scooter or a taxi, as it is very close to the center of Khao Lak. As always, you should bring enough water and sturdy footwear to explore the park comfortably. A swimsuit or bikini is also advisable, as you will stumble upon small hidden coves with beaches like the Small Sandy Beach, where you can swim and relax after a short hike through the jungle. Additionally, the park features another attraction-the Ton Chon Fa Waterfall, which promises a refreshing experience after a discovery tour through the jungle.
Information about Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park:
Entrance: Adults: 100 Baht (about $2.60); Children (3-14 years): 50 Baht (about $1.30)
Opening Hours: Open daily from 8 AM to 4:30 PM
Address: 7 Petchkasem Rd, Khuekkhak, Takua Pa District, Phang-nga 82210, Thailand
Restaurant: Open daily from 8 AM to 6 PM (extended to 7:30 PM during peak times); food here is relatively expensive at an average of 200 Baht (about $5.20)
Khao Sok National Park
If you have a bit more time, we highly recommend an excursion to the Khlong Phanom and Khao Sok National Parks. The massive Khao Sok National Park, covering 739 square kilometers, is located in Surat Thani Province, about 65 kilometers from Khao Lak. It is easily accessible by public transport. The park features stunning towering limestone mountains that rise majestically from the jungle. With a bit of luck, you may even encounter elephants and hornbills on your jungle tours. If you want to see the most beautiful spots in the national park, you can book guided excursions in all major towns.
Information about Khao Sok National Park:
Entrance: Adults: 300 Baht (about $7.90); Children (3-14 years): 150 Baht (about $3.90)
Opening Hours: Open daily from 8 AM to 5 PM
Address: 62 Khlong Sok, Phanom District, Surat Thani 84250, Thailand
Restaurant: There are no restaurants inside the national park, but some good dining options can be reached within walking distance around the park.
Special Features: You even have the option of staying on floating villas on the water.
Excursion to Phang Nga Bay
If you're up for a day trip to the surrounding area, make sure to plan an excursion to Phang Nga Bay. Admittedly, going on your own can be a bit tricky, as the bay is about 70 kilometers away from both James Bond Island and Khao Lak. If you're not comfortable making this journey alone, you can take advantage of one of the many well-organized tours available. These often include meals for the entire day. Khao Phing Kan, as James Bond Island is actually called, became world-famous due to the 1974 film 'The Man with the Golden Gun' and has since become one of Thailand's most popular sights. Hence, it can get quite crowded here. While you shouldn't expect seclusion and deserted beaches, the sight of the limestone cliff is still a must-see.

Excursion to the Similan Islands
Now we come to our personal highlight: a trip to one of the most beautiful diving areas in the world, the Similan Islands. The nine granite islands that make up the Mu Ko Similan National Park are located about 70 kilometers off the coast of Khao Lak. It is best to book a speedboat ride that will take you to the islands within 1.5 hours. If you don't have your own snorkeling equipment, most day tour operators will provide you with masks, snorkels, and flippers, so you don't have to worry about a thing. Meals are usually included as well. The advantage of such a tour: several of the nine islands are visited.
In front of the islands, you can admire the incredibly beautiful reefs inhabited by colorful fish, octopuses, and sea turtles, and relax on the stunning white sandy beaches of the islands. While you're not alone here, as the Similan Islands are a popular excursion destination, the paradisiacal conditions of the islands quickly make other tourists fade into the background. Believe me, a trip is worth it! And who knows, maybe you'll even get to swim with whale sharks, which are occasionally spotted off the coast of the Similan Islands.

If you want to enjoy the beauty of the islands a little longer, you can also camp or stay in bungalows on Koh Meang, Koh Similan, and Koh Tachai. An overnight stay should not cost more than $50. Since these islands are part of a national park, the Similan Islands have so far been spared from large hotel chains. Let's hope it stays that way for the future.

Restaurants in Khao Lak
What you absolutely can't miss during a vacation in Thailand is the excellent Thai cuisine, which has gained worldwide popularity due to its fresh and healthy ingredients. In Khao Lak, you'll find many small, authentic restaurants serving just that. One of these authentic eateries is the Krua Thai Restaurant, located right on Pak Weep Beach. Here, you can enjoy fresh seafood and delicious vegetable and curry dishes at reasonable prices. A similar selection can be found at Krua Rim Tang, which, although not directly on the beach, features super friendly staff and very fair prices. We were also impressed by the Memories Beach Bar, located right on the wide Pakarang Beach, inviting you to enjoy delicious Thai dishes during relaxing evenings.
Finally, we'd like to share where we witnessed the best sunset in Khao Lak: at the restaurant Nong Prew directly on White Sand Beach. Sitting on the beach with a cool drink in hand, watching the sun sink into the sea, is simply indescribably beautiful!
