Venice is also served by the Venice - Marco Polo Airport, named after the ancient and famous Venetian citizen. The airport is located on the lagoon, but on the mainland, so arrivals have to take either a bus, water taxi or water bus into the city.
The city is criss-crossed by one hundred and seventy-seven canals (the most important of which is the Grand Canal) and four hundred and fifty-five bridges (most of which are arched to allow boats to pass). It has one hundred and twenty-three churches and extends over one hundred and eighteen islands located between the mouth of the Adige (to the south) and Piave (to the north).

Campaniles:
Campaniles are bell towers that have the particularity of being off-centre and sometimes not attached to their church. They all have a different architecture and serve as landmarks in the city.

-The bell tower of Santa Margherita, originally higher than that of San Marco, was literally cut in two and partially inserted into the surrounding houses. Its base, about fifteen metres high, can still be seen on Campo Santa Margherita.

-Campanile San Francesco della Vigna: 69 metres.
-Campanile San Giorgio Maggiore: 63 metres.
-The bell tower San Stefano: 61 meters extremely leaning.
-The bell tower San Giorgio dei Greci: 44 metres, extremely steep.
-The bell tower of San Maria Formosa: 40 metres.
-The bell tower of San Felice: 22 metres.
-The bell tower of San Giovani Elemosinario.
-The bell tower of Santa Sofia.
-The bell tower of San Boldo was also reinstated in a housing complex.
