Floating Markets as a Means to an End

In fact, there is a long tradition behind the floating markets that many of you still associate with Bangkok today. Before Bangkok had a modern road network as we know it now, necessary traffic exclusively took place over water. Boats served as the means of transportation and were guided through the so-called Khlongs, the canals of Bangkok.

In the past, Bangkok was crisscrossed by canals.

Even the sale of goods took place on the Khlongs, so mass quantities of fruits and vegetables, meat, and fish were simply loaded onto small boats. Floating markets then became nothing out of the ordinary; in fact, the Thonburi district was even known for its floating markets. However, over time, Bangkok developed further, roads were built, and some canals were filled in, leading to the end of the markets on water. Some of these Khlongs still run through Thonburi today. As a warm-up, you can book various Khlong tours and let yourself be guided through the maze of Bangkok's canals. An absolute highlight!

Damnoen Saduak Revives Traditions

Even though the actual purpose is different today, you can still visit floating markets in Thailand. Although not in Bangkok itself, they are located about 80 kilometers away in the town of Damnoen Saduak. However, one must admit that here, tradition is less at the forefront and rather the business with tourists is what's emphasized. You'll find locals only in the early morning hours between 6 and 8 AM at the market, searching for pomelos, fresh rose apples, and other groceries.

Even in the early morning, hordes of tourists arrive as part of guided boat tours and literally clog the canal. Water traffic jams aren't something you see every day. And then the vendors really go all out: fresh dishes are cooked, spring rolls and pancakes look absolutely mouthwatering. It's no wonder that the curiosity of onlookers can be easily turned into profit. You can even buy accessories and souvenirs at the floating markets now.

If you want to see this spectacle, you can do so from surrounding cafes. Set your alarm a bit earlier than usual, enjoy the market at sunrise in wonderful peace, and later watch the colorful hustle and bustle of those who can't embrace the saying 'The early bird catches the worm.'
