Friday Lens Affair #29

Travelling gnome prank, Bahamas

Today I’m hosting quite amusing photograph of a travelling gnome prank taken by Eric Gaden. Who stands behind The Adventure Nickel Website and Blog! The picture got my eye and I though there must be some crazy story behind it! Like behind all gnome stories :) Please follow Eric on Twitter.

It reminded me this crazy travelling gnome prank which according to Wikipedia was first reported back in 1986 in Sydney.  ‘An Eastern suburbs gnome-owner was distressed when she discovered her gnome had been stolen at the weekend. A note was found in its place: “Dear mum, couldn’t stand the solitude any longer. Gone off to see the world. Don’t be worried, I’ll be back soon. Love Bilbo xxx.” – reported Sydney Morning Herald.

Photo Story: Travelling gnome prank, Bahamas

I have a confession to make. We are kidnappers. Well, gnome – kidnappers I suppose. It’s worse than that though.

We are serial gnome – kidnappers. Our first one was a crime of opportunity. We were about to take a cross country RV trip, we were out on a walk and saw the little elf. One thing led to another and before we knew it we were sending back glossy photos of their gnome out wandering through scenic vistas. That elf stayed with us for a little over a year.

So when we knew we were going our on a cruise ship to travel the world, we had to have a gnome. This time it was planned and the gnome was known to us. My sister in law came home one day to find her gnome an her sister suspiciously gone. This pictures this lovely creature enjoying the white sand beaches of Half Moon Cay, a private island in the Bahamas owned by Carnival Cruise Lines. Poor Gnomie.

Love the Gnome!! I’m a bit envious of all of his adventures!

Yes he did, I bet he didn’t pay for his plane ticket either! Oh to be a gnome ;-)

  3. There is no place like gnome (sorry). Oh dear, gnome thieves. I don’t know whether to criticise or laugh. The gnomes certainly had a good time of it and enjoyed their travels. My wife tends to take cuddly toys on her travels, much more flexible, cuddly and easier to squeeze into her hand bag!

    • Ha ha ha, I think you should laugh, at least he got to travel a bit instead of standing in someone’s garden forever. lol

Haha. Too funny – thanks for sharing that little insight into your life and, um, psychology!
What a cool idea. I need a travel mascot….. and since we’re leaving on a beach mini-vacation in just a few minutes, I guess I gotta hustle!
