The Best Dishes of Italian Cuisine

The Culture of the Aperitif

La Dolce Vita in Italy would only be half as enjoyable without the aperitif in all its variations. An ancient tradition that is still entrenched in the culture today. The aperitif is enjoyed before the meal and serves to stimulate the appetite.

When toasting, the magic word is 'Salute'. Sometimes it varies, and you'll hear 'Cin Cin' instead. So, cheers!

In the evenings around 7 PM, these appetizers are particularly popular for toasting - that's when you'll discover the Italian zest for life no matter where you look. The classic among Italians is the Aperol Spritz. The sweet yet bitter taste is unmistakable and is based on a secret recipe.

Italian-style Appetizers

Antipasti - these are the appetizers in Italian. Antipasti are a Mediterranean way to pleasantly start lunch or dinner with light bites that satisfy initial hunger and shorten the waiting time. Antipasti are served so that there is something for everyone's taste, whether warm or cold dishes. No special culinary skills are needed to prepare them - just let your creativity and imagination run wild when making your own antipasti. I'll now introduce you to a selection of the most popular antipasti from Italian cuisine.

Bruschetta is a true classic. Grilled slices of bread are topped with fresh tomatoes, basil leaves, olive oil, and a good amount of garlic - that's all you really need.

Did you know?

Avoid the common pronunciation mistake: it's pronounced 'Brusketta'.

Seasoned with salt and pepper, bruschetta is a typical 'poor man's food' as the ingredients were simple and generally always available in Italy back then.

Even today, bruschetta remains a popular appetizer and can be prepared in various ways - there's basically no limit to creativity.

For meat lovers, the traditional carpaccio is certainly more interesting. It consists of thinly sliced beef served with grated Parmesan and a bit of arugula. This dish also varies: there are fine fish carpaccio and even fruit and vegetables served in this way. Vegetarians will appreciate it!

Looking for great deals?

You can find numerous offers for a trip to Italy as well as deals for your city trip to Rome.

Especially in the Mediterranean region, a salad made from fresh seafood is popular, and it's also my personal favorite. Typical for the salad are mussels, squid, and clams, alongside vegetables like celery and carrots. The salad is typically served with lemon, parsley, and good olive oil. Very fresh, light, and delicious!

Primo piatto - the first main course

For pasta lovers, this is particularly appetizing: Traditionally, during the first course in Italy, pasta such as spaghetti, gnocchi, risotto, or lasagna is served, providing ample carbohydrates. If you don't wish to order pasta, you can instead sip on a soup.

Here are some inspirations that you might consider during your next restaurant visit on your Italian vacation:

Risotto alla zucca: delicious risotto with pumpkin, which is particularly a highlight of Italian cuisine on cold autumn days. But what makes this dish so irresistible? The creamy consistency, the beautiful yellow color, or the fact that such a simple dish tastes so extraordinary? You should try it and decide for yourself!

Another traditional dish is pasta with lentils. I would describe this dish as hearty and flavorful. Depending on your taste, this pasta dish is prepared either with a liquid or a thicker sauce. A true gourmet experience!

Secondo piatto - the second main course

For the second main course in Italian cuisine, a variety of meats or fish are served. There are also plenty of vegetarian dishes in Italian cuisine.

An eggplant casserole with mozzarella and tomato sauce, Parmigiana di melanzane, instantly brings Mediterranean flavor to the table. It requires only a handful of ingredients, yet offers so much flavor. Due to its appearance, it somewhat resembles a typical lasagna, but the taste is incomparable.

Fresh herbs and delicious vegetables

After a delicious plate of spaghetti aglio e olio, this is one of the most famous dishes. We're talking about Saltimbocca alla romana, a classic of Roman cuisine.

This dish consists of veal fillet topped with Parma ham and sage leaves, then rolled up. Literally, Saltimbocca means 'jump into the mouth'. Well, if that's not an invitation!

Piatto unico

Almost forgot! Of course, pizza cannot be missing from Italian cuisine. By now, it's found all over the world, but you can only get it in its original form in Italy, if not only in its birthplace Naples. By the way, it's perfectly normal in Italy to cut pizza with a knife and fork and then simply eat it with your hands. So you don't have to fear any dirty looks.

Pizza is offered and consumed as a standalone dish in restaurants. Rightly so! It's quite filling and satisfying. Its countless variations are sure to please everyone.

Looking for an Italian dessert?

How could it be different - of course, a typical Italian dessert must not be missing at the end of a perfect menu. On restaurant menus, you'll find these listed under dolce. Refined and delicious desserts are the crowning glory of every meal. You definitely shouldn't miss out on this!

Probably, coffee lovers are familiar with tiramisu. The main ingredient besides coffee is mascarpone cream. Heavenly! For those who don't like coffee, there are alternatives like tiramisu with strawberries, which is especially delicious on warm summer days, or tiramisu with Nutella.

Italian Ice Cream

You can certainly relax culinarily with a delicious Italian gelato. With the onset of summer, original Italian ice cream is obviously the most popular. Though ice cream in ice cream parlors is available all year round. The countless ice cream shops scattered throughout the country invite you to try qualitatively homemade ice cream in various flavors, from Amarena to hazelnut to pistachio.

Alongside ice cream, granita, a type of sorbet from Sicily, is a very popular refreshment. Particularly the lemon flavor is unbeatable. Be sure to try this during your Sicily vacation.

Don't forget coffee after the meal!

Of course, a cup of espresso should not be missed afterward, as this is simply typical Italian. In Italy, espresso is considered to aid digestion after a hearty meal. Caution is advised: You should not order a cappuccino after lunchtime, as Italians only drink coffee with milk for breakfast or in the morning.
