Koh Samui is enchanting and beautiful. The further you travel from the north towards the south, the more pristine and untouched the landscape becomes. There is much to discover, and if you are planning a vacation on the island, you shouldn't miss these tips.
Koh Samui has everything a traveler's heart desires. In addition to stunning, pearly white beaches and truly breathtaking nature, you'll experience fantastic food and pure vacation vibes. The island is nicknamed the Coconut Island - and rightly so. Nowhere else does it seem that there are as many coconut palms as there are here. Especially if you're visiting Thailand for the first time, the island is the perfect place to get to know the culture and lifestyle of the Thai people and to be captivated by the fantastic atmosphere. I will provide helpful tips for travel, accommodations, and dining, and introduce a tour that shows you the island from a brand new, original side.

Important Facts about Koh Samui at a Glance
The Best Travel Time for Koh Samui
The best months to travel to Thailand are usually those that fall into our European winter. However, that is a bit different in Koh Samui. Here, the rainy season lasts from late September to December, which does not mean that you'll be stuck in the monsoon the whole time. Usually, there is a heavy downpour at midday that disappears just as quickly as it comes. The temperatures are still very pleasant, averaging around 26 degrees Celsius. Another advantage is that fewer people are on the island during these months, and prices drop accordingly. By January, many Europeans are already returning to Koh Samui as it becomes significantly drier and temperatures hover around a summery warm 30 degrees Celsius. Another popular travel time for visiting Koh Samui is during the summer holidays in Germany, which usually fall in July and August. You can find more tips on the best travel times for Koh Samui in my travel calendar.
Traveling to Koh Samui
Koh Samui (also known as Ko Samui) has an international airport, making it quite simple to travel from the United States. While most connections do go through Bangkok, it's just a short hop from there to the island. Depending on which airline you book with, your luggage may be checked directly to Koh Samui - if you book separate flight tickets, you'll need to go through immigration, pick up your luggage, and check in again. However, this process is relatively quick, so don't let that deter you. When you land on the island, you will be surprised at how beautifully the airport is designed. The gates are open and filled with colorful plants. You'll feel like you are in a botanical garden and get a perfect first impression of the island's stunning nature.
Koh Samui - A Dream Island Come True
My tips for Koh Samui are now intended to give you a little insight into island life, so you can quickly orient yourself on site. The island in Thailand has everything that visitors from around the world desire - white sandy beaches surrounded by lush palm forests, lovable locals, and temple complexes for that extra dose of culture.
Because Koh Samui is so popular with both tourists and ex-pats, there is a particularly large range of activities to make your time as varied as possible.
The island is divided into seven districts, with Chaweng and Lamai being the most important in terms of tourism. Bo Put is home to the airport of Koh Samui, making it the largest tourist spot on the island. For those seeking a quieter experience, small beaches in the south and west are recommended.
Transportation on Koh Samui
To explore the island, there are various options - some are more adventurous than others.
Shared Taxi Songthaew
- Modified delivery trucks where you sit on side benches in the back, functioning as a kind of shared taxi. Just check briefly with the driver to see if he is headed in your direction, and off you go. Cost: €1-5, depending on the distance.
If you are driving a moped in Koh Samui, keep in mind that in Thailand, they drive on the left!
Taxi
- Depending on how good your negotiation skills are abroad, this can be a comfortable and cheap option or a comfortable and expensive one. If you can convince the driver to turn on the meter, you've won. Otherwise, you'll pay his price. Either way, a taxi ride in Koh Samui is significantly cheaper than in Germany.
Two-Wheelers
- You can rent scooters almost on every corner. This gives you independence, but remember that they drive on the left, and you should always ride attentively. Don't forget to wear a helmet and only ride sober.
- If you want, you can rent bicycles for shorter distances or for action-packed tours and explore the surroundings at your own pace. I will show you how such a bike tour can look further down.
Dining in Koh Samui
Since most places in Koh Samui cater to tourists, you will find diverse European, American as well as Asian delicacies here. So if you are traveling far for the first time, you don't have to worry about not being able to get enough to eat. If you want to ease into Asian cuisine and occasionally crave pizza and burgers, you'll find the perfect combination in Koh Samui.
My tip, as always: definitely eat at street stalls - and they should preferably be in a side alley. That's where you'll find the cheapest, most authentic, and delicious Thai food. Just thinking of the diverse aromas makes my mouth water.
Fresh Fish and Colorful Fruits
The island is known for its fresh fish - so make sure to try the freshly caught seafood and enjoy the variety that is offered on the island. Various curries, Pad Thai, and rice are the perfect side dishes to fresh crab and different types of fish. I can promise you, they will impress you with their unique spices and herbs - no comparison to the Thai food we have here in the United States!
For dessert, you must order fresh fruit. Especially mangoes, pineapples, and the Queen of Fruits, mangosteen, taste uniquely delicious here and are the perfect complement to the spicy and savory main courses.
The Most Beautiful Beaches in Koh Samui
Pearl white beaches, turquoise sea, and in the background, the giant coconut palms - this is how one imagines the beaches in Thailand, right? To help you choose your very own favorite beach, I have put together the most beautiful ones here, including an overview map.
- Chaweng Beach is located on the east coast and is the most beautiful and longest beach on the island. The view is stunning, there are restaurants everywhere, and you certainly won't be bored here. However, it is also very touristy, as this beach is where most of the region's hotels are located.
- Located in the southeast of the island, you will find Lamai Beach. There are some hotels here as well, but it is quieter and more authentic.
- Maenam Beach: Located in the north of Koh Samui, Maenam Beach offers the perfect place for those seeking peace. It isn't as bustling as the more famous Chaweng Beach, but you can still find restaurants and bars here.
- Silver Beach: Thong Takhian Beach, as this beach is actually called, is located near Coral Cove Beach in the east of the island and attracts visitors with its fine sand and clear water - what more could you want?
- Coral Cove Beach: This beach in the east of the island is the perfect postcard image. The clean, golden sand provides a beautiful contrast to the lush green of the palms.
- Choeng Mon Beach: Located northeast of Koh Samui Airport, the expansive Choeng Mon Beach is perfect for families and anyone looking to relax without much hustle and bustle.
- Bophut Beach: This beach in the north of Koh Samui delights with its spaciousness and proximity to Fisherman's Village Bophut, where numerous restaurants, shops, and markets warmly invite you to enjoy and stroll.
- Lipa Noi Beach: Also in the west of the island, you'll find stunning beaches. Lipa Noi Beach is a relatively untouched, quiet beach, which is among the most beautiful on the island.
Sights & Activities
To give you an idea of what sights and activities await you when you vacation in Koh Samui, I've put together some tips to make choosing what you must see or do a little easier.
Top 5 Attractions in Koh Samui
Big Buddha Wat Phra Yai: Even during your approach, the enormous golden statue of the Big Buddha welcomes you, and whether you arrive by plane or by boat, this sight is the first thing you will see. The impressive twelve-meter-high Buddha statue is located on a small island just off the coast of Koh Samui. If you plan to visit the temple complex, remember to dress appropriately. The religious site should be entered only with covered shoulders and ideally with covered knees. That's why it's advisable to always have a sarong handy for sightseeing tours. Especially when the sun is starting to set and the area is bathed in warm light, it is particularly beautiful here.
Tarnim Magic // Secret Buddha Garden: In the heart of the Thai jungle and at the center of the island, a true highlight awaits you. Be sure to visit the Secret Buddha Garden in the mountains of the island, as here you'll find many weathered stone figures of people and animals in an enchanting garden. A stream flows through the garden, and if you come early in the morning, you can hear the birds chirping, stroll through the garden, and enjoy the unique atmosphere almost on your own.
Wat Khunaram: Another truly impressive sight is the enchanting Wat Khunaram temple - the shrine of the monk Luang Pho Daeng. The complex is remarkable, and the mummified body of the monk is unique. He is said to have died during meditation in 1973. A truly extraordinary stop on your exploration tour.
Night Market Lamai: On Sundays, you have the chance to explore the famous night market on the island. The Lamai Sunday Night Market opens every Sunday at 5 PM and offers a wide range of shopping options. Take this opportunity to try the typical Thai street food and indulge in the various dishes and snacks. The prices are great, and the selection is huge.
Samui Elephant Sanctuary: As you know, I am not a fan of elephant riding in Thailand. Most of you feel the same way - nonetheless, for many, it is a dream to get up close to these gentle giants. At the Samui Elephant Sanctuary, it is possible. The animals there are well taken care of, and with your entry fees, you help support this type of animal care and ensure that the elephants have a good long-term home.
More Activities in Koh Samui
If you're not in the mood for sightseeing, then all opportunities are open to you to simply head out by boat and explore the nearby islands. The best place for this is the Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park, an impressive archipelago about 35 kilometers from Koh Samui. Here, there are snorkeling opportunities, and for divers, there's a lot to see. The best times for this are the months of February to October, with the water being particularly clear in March and April.
The Untouched South of Koh Samui
No matter how beautiful and comfortable it may be in the touristy areas of the island - nothing beats an excursion into the non-touristy, original south of the coconut island. Book a guided mountain bike tour where the guides will take you to the most beautiful beaches while also giving you insight into the lives of the locals. You can book the Coco Life Experience here; I've tested it and can definitely recommend it.
You start the tour with a short ride along the beach at Ban Kao Beach before heading right into the lush green palm groves. After just a few kilometers, your route will take you to a rubber plantation where you can watch the workers harvesting latex. You'll also learn all about how this natural raw material is produced.
Exciting Insights into Island Life
After lunch, a thrilling leg follows through the south to a coconut farm, where you can learn all about what happens to green coconuts. Following the various processing steps is very exciting and enlightening. The local farmers bring all their harvest here, and the factory processes the fruit as efficiently as possible for profit. The community effort strengthens the local cohesion of farmers and ensures stable and fair prices. By participating in the bike tour, you are also supporting the locals of the region. So, the bike tour is worth it twice. By the way, to top it off, you also get a real Thai massage that perfectly rounds off the sporty day.
