How to Get to Koh Tao
Getting There
Koh Tao is part of the Samui Archipelago and is the third-largest island located north of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand. There is no airport on Koh Tao, so you will arrive by ferry from either Koh Samui or Surat Thani on the mainland. From Bangkok, you can take a more adventurous route by bus and ferry to your vacation destination. However, traveling by boat has its advantages: you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the beautiful islands along the way.
- Koh Samui: 2 hours for approximately $16
- Surat Thani: 3h45 - 5h15 for approximately $20-24
- Bangkok: 8h45 - 13h45 for approximately $24-29
The Most Beautiful Beaches on the Island
Explore the Beaches
Picturesque dream beaches are undoubtedly the main attraction that draws travelers from around the world to enchanting Thailand. With tropical warm temperatures and abundant sunshine, it's the perfect destination for beachgoers. The coastlines of Koh Tao are blessed with incredibly beautiful beaches and hidden coves. I'll show you the best candidates with favorite beach potential.
In the southwest, you'll find the idyllic Sai Nuan Beach, where it is usually still relatively quiet.
In the bathtub-warm, shallow water, you can wonderfully drift around and explore the underwater world while snorkeling. You can also go on an exploration tour and find even more small coves in the vicinity. From the terraces of the restaurants nearby, you will have a wonderful view of the water while enjoying your lunch.
This bay is a paradise for divers and snorkelers: crystal-clear water, exciting coral reefs and rocks, plus a perfect beach to relax under shade-giving trees. Explore the underwater world and let your soul unwind on the beach while gazing at the fantastic backdrop. You can recharge at the restaurant with a large portion of Pad Thai.
A turquoise dream - that's Sai Daeng Beach in the northeast of the island. Here, too, you can swim and snorkel beautifully while admiring vibrant corals (make sure to keep your distance!), spotting small reef sharks, and observing colorful fish. With a bit of luck, you might even encounter a sea turtle that calls the waters around Koh Tao home.
Amazing Viewpoints
Top Viewpoints
Primarily, it's Koh Tao's breathtaking landscape that attracts so many tourists. White beaches, tropical green palm forests, rugged cliffs, and crystal-clear water shimmering in all imaginable turquoise and blue tones - you can experience this unforgettable sight, especially from above. Therefore, I highly recommend heading to one of the many viewpoints. Here are the most beautiful lookout points:
- John Suwan Viewpoint: This viewpoint is located at the southernmost tip of the island and offers an impressive panoramic view of the two adjacent bays, Thian Og and Chalok Baan Kao, and the lush mountain landscape. From the Freedom Beach Resort, you can reach your destination after a hike through spectacular jungle.
- Koh Nang Yuan Viewpoint: The most postcard-worthy view of the island is located on the nearby island group of Koh Nang Yuan, northwest of Koh Tao. After a little climbing, you can enjoy a perfect view of the small islands, which are connected by a strip of white sand and picturesque turquoise coral reefs.
- West Coast Mountain Viewpoint: This viewpoint requires a more challenging climb in the island's center. However, you will be rewarded with an ultimate view of the west and east coasts with all their bays. The starting point for the hike is Sairee Beach Road.
Simply Dive
Diving Opportunities
You've probably heard that Koh Tao is considered the ultimate island for diving.
Here, not only do you'd find bays with crystal-clear water, paradisiacal reefs, and a colorful underwater world waiting for you, but the warm temperatures also allow you to fully enjoy your dive. Moreover, the island is known as one of the cheapest dive spots in the world! This is a compelling argument for many beginners looking to explore the art of diving in a course, but also for experienced divers who appreciate the variety of marine life in the Gulf of Thailand. You can even obtain a dive certificate here at an incredibly low cost.
- Beginners: Mango Bay (<16m depth) and Japanese Gardens (<14m)
- Open Water: White Rock (<20m), Nang Youan Pinnacle (<19m) and Hin Wong Pinnacle (<40m)
