Kuala Lumpur Tips
Discover the Highlights of Malaysia's Capital
Are you wondering what Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur has to offer? Quite a lot, that's for sure! To help you navigate the urban jungle (and that can be taken literally with KL), I'm presenting my personal tips for Kuala Lumpur.
Kuala Lumpur Tips for the Urban Jungle
It is the largest city in the country, known mainly for its landmark, the Petronas Towers, which at 452 meters are the tallest twin towers in the world. It is a melting pot of diverse cultures and ethnicities, with Malays, Indians, and Chinese having left a unique mark over the years. We're talking about Kuala Lumpur - affectionately called KL by the locals - the vibrant capital of Malaysia.
Airport Transfer KL - From the Airport to the City
Before you can start sightseeing in Malaysia's largest city, you need to cover the 45 kilometers from the international airport, KLIA, to the city center. If you want to keep it simple, you can take a taxi or try Grab, a popular ride-hailing option widely used in Asia. For 50 - 95 MYR, you can travel comfortably to the city. But be cautious: traffic in Kuala Lumpur can be a nightmare during rush hours. What usually takes only 30 minutes can sometimes stretch to 1.5 hours, as I have experienced. To avoid traffic jams, it's best to take the KLIA Ekspres, a train that runs between the airport and downtown. The journey takes about half an hour and costs 55 MYR; if you book a return ticket, it's only 100 MYR. The modern trains operate daily from 5 AM to 1 AM, every 15 to 30 minutes, making it easy to access both terminals at the airport, KLIA and KLIA2. The third option to get from the airport to the city is the Airport Coach, a bus that runs between KLIA and KL Sentral every half hour, taking about an hour. The travel time is also traffic-dependent, so make sure to plan enough time. The airport bus is the cheapest alternative, costing 10 or 18 MYR.
Tip: Finding the Right Accommodation in KL
The prices for accommodation and food in Kuala Lumpur are, like in almost all Southeast Asian cities, low, so you get a lot for your money here. You can't go wrong with budget traveler hostels or private apartments. Here are my three tips for finding the right accommodation:
- Look for a Hotel that is close to public transport. Many parts of the city are not pedestrian-friendly.
- Want to be right in the heart of the action? Then book accommodation in the trendy Bukit Bintang area. You'll find out what awaits you here shortly.
- Keep an eye out for a place with a rooftop pool! From here, you can enjoy priceless views of the city, especially at night when its true beauty shines. Such apartments can be found on Airbnb.
Attractions in Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur has numerous highlights waiting for you! I have created a dedicated article featuring the must-see Kuala Lumpur attractions. Here you'll learn more about the Petronas Towers, the mystical Batu Caves, the KL Tower, the trendy Bukit Bintang area, and other attractions. The article also covers how to get to these sights, their opening hours, ticket prices, and where to buy the cheapest tickets.
The Best Rooftop Bars in Kuala Lumpur
If you want to save money on tickets for the Petronas Towers or Menara KL but still enjoy an amazing view of Kuala Lumpur, it's a great idea to visit one of the city's many rooftop bars. Treat yourself to a delicious drink, savor the moment, and wrap up your city trip to Kuala Lumpur in one of my favorite bars:
- Luna Bar: Located on the 34th floor of the Pacific Regency, this is the first rooftop bar I want to introduce to you. It remains one of the best rooftop bars in Kuala Lumpur, renowned for its delicious cocktails and tasty snacks. The real highlight, however, is the view, offering an unobstructed sight of the skyline including the Petronas Towers.
- View Rooftop Bar: Located at the GTower near the Petronas Towers, this bar is open until 3 AM on weekends. Celebrate in three lounges and enjoy exquisite cocktail creations. While the dress code is somewhat relaxed, do ensure to wear closed-toe shoes to avoid being denied entry.
- Heli Lounge Bar: My absolute favorite among rooftop bars in Kuala Lumpur. This bar is located on the helicopter landing pad of Menara KH, which is still used as such during the day. Starting at 6 PM, tables and chairs are placed on the area; only a thin barrier separates you from the edge of the landing pad. The cocktail and beer prices are moderate, and the dress code is fairly casual. The atmosphere and view are unmatched.
Feeling Inspired by Kuala Lumpur?
So, did I spark your desire to explore? Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur is definitely worth a visit, and to ensure you experience all the highlights, I recommend staying for three to four days before continuing on through Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, or Cambodia.
