The History of Almond Trees in Mallorca
The island dresses itself every spring in a pink and white floral gown that fulfills the wildest dreams of all romantics, thanks to the Moors. In the 10th century, they brought the almond tree from the Orient to Mallorca, where it found ideal conditions to thrive. However, without a devastating plague, the island beloved by Germans would never have managed to have seven million trees-some wild and some cultivated-scattered across Mallorca. In the 19th century, phylloxera ravaged Mallorca, destroying almost all the vineyards on the island. Farmers pivoted and successfully produced almonds in the former wine plantations.
Today, two factors threaten the beauty of the almond trees in Mallorca. Firstly, almond farmers must contend with industrial competition from California. Many plantations still harvest Mallorcan almonds by hand, which, by the way, taste much better than the overseas competition due to their higher protein content. This labor-intensive process involves striking the branches of the trees with long sticks, causing the ripe almonds to fall. It's a real back-breaking job in the heat of a Mallorcan summer, all while the party is in full swing at Ballermann. Secondly, outdated tree stocks and a wood fungus are threatening the almond trees. Roughly 7,000 tons of almonds are still harvested annually on the island. Thanks to the good quality and the growing popularity of the Mallorcan almond blossom, interest in these charming and fairy-tale-like trees continues to rise. As a result, the trade in Mallorcan almond products is flourishing again.
Typical Mallorcan Almond Products
The typical culinary highlights featuring Mallorcan almonds are, of course, primarily desserts. Turrón, a variant of white nougat, or a slice of Gato de Almendra, a delicious almond cake, are indulgences worth having even during the strictest diet. You certainly won't regret it! For all the sweet tooth folks among you who simply can't get enough, there are also numerous ice variations. If you prefer something more savory, you should definitely try a roasted suckling pig with almond filling. Pair it with a glass of almond liqueur - simply heavenly!
For those who wish to take the scent of almond blossoms home, they can do so in the form of almond perfume, also known as Flor d'Ametler. It takes several years to create the perfume, and the most beautiful almonds are specially reserved for the elegant bottles. A wonderful way to bring your vacation during the almond blossom in Mallorca back home, as scents are known to remind us most vividly of the beautiful moments we had.
- Vacation Guru Tip: The perfume factory in Mallorca can even be visited. You can find it in the small suburban settlement of Pont d'Inca near Palma, which belongs to the municipality of Marratxí. A guided tour lasts about 1 hour. Just make sure to make an appointment by phone beforehand.
Where to Experience the Almond Blossom in Mallorca
You can flexibly explore the almond blossom in Mallorca with a rental car. If possible, definitely rent a convertible! Because the temperatures are already suitable for driving with the top down towards the almond trees and letting the alluring scent blow straight to your nose. A particularly beautiful route leads from Palma to Valldemossa in the north of the island. Take the Ma-1110 on the way there and return via Esporles (Ma-1120), so you can admire plenty of plantations along the way.
On the stretch from Llucmajor to Cala Pi, you will drive through small roads that are often completely empty in spring. Here, the blossoms of the almond trees aren't the only stars, since sheep and Mallorca's black pigs graze among the more loosely grouped trees. The dry stone walls typical for the island frame the meadows. An agricultural idyll that you often need to share with no one but the locals during this time of year. So why not explore the island during such a special time this year!
But you can also admire the almond blossom in Mallorca by bike or on foot, for example, in the south between Andratx and S'Arraco, or in the east in the regions around Santanyi and Felantix. Just follow your nose to small side streets and alleys that even regular visitors to Mallorca might not know. You won't be disappointed, as the trees emit such a pleasantly intense fragrance that you won't be able to miss larger gatherings.
- Vacation Guru Tip: You can get a feel for the history of the almond trees and the island by taking the red train from Palma to Sóller. The narrow-gauge railway line, in operation since 1912, used to transport oranges across the island. Today, you can ride through Mallorca, passing by numerous blooming almond trees. Perfect for anyone not averse to a little nostalgia.
The almond blossom in Mallorca can be admired all over the island. Keep in mind that the blossoms in the mild east of the island bloom earlier than in the rough Tramuntana mountains. You will find Mallorcan almond plantations, where the trees grow closely together to create a sea of pink and white blossoms, increasingly in the interior of the island, as particularly fertile conditions prevail here.
