Noordwijk is a municipality on the west coast of the Netherlands. Located in the province of South Holland, you will find this town of 43,000 residents nestled between the major cities of The Hague and Amsterdam. Both the tourist-favorite Noordwijk aan Zee and Noordwijk-Binnen are part of this municipality, which has earned a reputation as the 'Flower Bathing Resort of Europe.' This is due to the high number of flower fields that transform the coastal town into a colorful paradise in spring.

Those of us who, like me, do not live directly by the coast, surely understand that time at the sea ranks among the absolute highlights of every trip. That's why Noordwijk is the perfect destination for a beach vacation - once you arrive at the beach promenade, you'll understand why: In front of you stretches over 13 kilometers of fine, golden sandy beach alongside the vast blue sea. Whether you want to kite surf, canoe, and surf in the water or practice yoga and play beach volleyball on the sand, there are no limits to sports here. But even if you want to lounge lazily on the sand, stroll along the water, or hang out at one of the beach bars, you will find satisfaction here.

The coastal town is surrounded by endless dune landscapes and forests that invite long walks in every season. Not only many hikers enjoy discovering nature here. You can also explore the dunes by bike or mountain bike, admire the tulip fields in spring, and with a bit of luck, even spot wild animals.

If you love the beach and never want to leave, you can stay directly at the Beach Hotel Noordwijk and enjoy the fitness studio, sauna, wellness area, and culinary highlights with an ocean view.

Tip: Do you want to travel without leaving your four-legged friends behind? In Noordwijk aan Zee, dogs are warmly welcomed. From dog-friendly restaurants to accommodations and beaches, man's best friends are always welcome here.

Culture at the Coast

Art and culture play a significant role: Throughout the year, various events take place that attract locals and visitors alike. Additionally, museums provide a great insight into the history and culture of this coastal town.

Events in Noordwijk

If you like to stay active while on vacation, you can participate in the regular Golf Carousel, beach yoga, or the monthly 10,000-step hike.

  • Kofferbak Flea Markets: Largest market in the Bollenstreek Jun.-Aug. Sun 9am-4pm
  • Fall Market: Flea market, food, live music on 19.10.2019 10am-6pm
  • Christmas Market: Crafts & more 15.12.2019 12-5pm

There are also exhibitions, music events, and markets that regularly attract countless visitors. A definite highlight is the Bloemencorso Bollenstreek, which will again take place on April 25, 2020: An annual parade featuring colorful flower floats to usher in spring.

There are outdoor theater performances, artistic acrobatics at the Cirque des Dunes, and the Painter's Festival, where numerous artists create their works directly on the beach. You'll definitely never be bored in Noordwijk.

Museums in Noordwijk

To get to know the municipality a little better, I recommend visiting the attractions in Noordwijk. Your first stop should be the Noordwijk Museum, which introduces you to the history through various exhibits and historical artifacts. The Museum Engelandvaarders focuses on the time of World War II: Learn about the so-called Englandvaarders who attempted to escape from the Netherlands during the war. In the Atlantikwall Museum, you can view the bunkers where soldiers had to hide during World War II. Just the landscape at this large site promises a worthwhile visit.

Guru Tip: If that's still not enough sightseeing for you, consider a trip to the most beautiful sights in Amsterdam, which you can reach within 40 minutes by car.
