Romantic Oia
Oia - Authentic and Beautiful
Unlike Fira, the bustling capital of Santorini, Oia, often written simply as Ia, is generally a bit quieter and more idyllic. The narrow streets and alleys are not as crowded during the day, and in the numerous cafés and restaurants, many of which have a terrace, you can often find a free sunny spot with a magnificent view. The only exception is if you arrive just in time for sunset. You definitely shouldn't miss this spectacle, but you should know that at this time, you're unlikely to find empty bars and restaurants.
Although most tourists are drawn to the old castle in the evening hours, many have now caught onto the insider tip that some restaurants also offer a fantastic view of the magical sunset. The aforementioned castle is known as a hotspot and is often completely packed. So our tip: Reserve a table early at a restaurant of your choice, such as Pelekanos or Catch Bar, and enjoy this magical moment! It is said that some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world are experienced in Oia, Santorini. Just see for yourself.
Accommodations with Incredible Views
If you ask a local where the best accommodations in Santorini are, you'll often get Oia as a response. And for good reason: Right on the rocky coast, along the caldera, truly impressive accommodations have been built, or rather carved, that seem to outdo each other in beauty. While one has a dreamy infinity pool, another impresses with its simple yet traditional architecture nestled in an old cave. What most have in common is that thanks to their hillside location, they all offer guests a breathtaking view!
All this beyond your imagination? Then take a closer look at the beautiful accommodations on the Greek island - from cozy spots to chic luxury suites, there's definitely something here for everyone's taste.
What Oia Has to Offer
Of course, vacationers who stay here for more than a day are not just drawn by the spectacular sunsets. No, there's much more than that.
Charming Churches, an Impressive Ruin, and Small Boutiques
The main street of Oia, for instance, invites long strolls and is lined with numerous small cafés and boutiques. Charming little churches, including the Church of Panagia, and the traditional windmills typical of the Cyclades adorn the town, as do the many bright white houses that provide a beautiful contrast to the bright blue Aegean Sea.
Also worth a visit are the many small art galleries in Oia with their unique paintings and crafts, as well as the famous maritime museum, where you can admire exciting exhibitions and historical photos of the former seafaring town. Climbing up to the ruins of the Argyri Castle is also well worth it, as this former residence of the nobility is now considered Oia's most popular viewpoint. As you stroll from one sight to the next, the place seems much larger than it actually is.
Boat Tours and Excursions Around the Island
From the Armeni Bay, a small harbor in the southwest of the town, you can take a leisurely boat ride along the caldera. For relaxation, Ammoudi Bay, located at the other harbor in the west of Oia, is recommended, as here you can unwind on natural, small pebble beaches. And believe us - after some strenuous steps and ascents, relaxation will come just in time.
If you don't mind a bit of exertion and like to stay active during your vacation, we recommend a hike, for example to the popular neighboring town of Fira, which is about 11 kilometers, or roughly 2.5 hours of hiking distance away. But please don't forget to drink enough water in the heat - a stroll over the volcanic island can be quite sweaty. Alternatively, renting a car can allow you to explore the entire island and other beautiful towns at your own pace.
