Picturesque Amalfi Coast
Discover the most beautiful beaches and the most picturesque villages.
The Amalfi Coast in Italy awaits you with charming villages, hidden coves and beaches, impressive cathedrals, and numerous opportunities for extraordinary activities.
To help you know which places are particularly worth visiting, here you'll find all the information about the most beautiful and popular sights, beaches, and locations along this stunning coastal stretch. At the end, we'll also clarify whether it's really as beautiful here as it appears in the photos and how realistic the image of the Amalfi Coast portrays on Instagram. Who's coming along on a trip to Italy?
Your journey to and along the Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is located south on the Sorrento Peninsula, which lies in the western part of Italy, on the Gulf of Salerno. The nearest airport is in Naples, which you can reach from Germany in just under two hours. From here, you can also take public transport via Sorrento to Amalfi, but you'll be faster and more flexible with your own car or rental car. This way, you have more freedom and can start your own road trip along the Amalfitana coastal road. It's about 36 miles from Naples to the Amalfi Coast if you want to start in Salerno. Especially during peak season, you should prepare for heavy traffic, and parking in small towns can be challenging. The smaller your rental car, the better.
Try to avoid peak hours and the busiest places like Amalfi, or reach them by excursion boats. If you travel first to Sorrento and then along the coast from west to east, you'll be driving on the side of the road facing the sea and can look forward to stunning views. Still, keep your eyes on the road as it can be quite winding and adventurous. At times, the roads can be so narrow and crowded that no two cars can pass side by side, and they can only be driven alternately from one direction.
New stricter traffic rules on the Amalfi Coast
Like many other popular destinations worldwide, the Amalfi Coast is unfortunately affected by overtourism. Long traffic jams, hours of waiting, and a tense atmosphere are the results of the coastal road, Amalfitana, being nearly overcrowded during peak season. It leads to the beautiful towns and villages of the Amalfi Coast.
Therefore, starting June 15, 2022, a new traffic rule came into effect, which aims to halve the number of cars allowed on the Amalfitana during peak season. A so-called license plate system is intended to help, allowing tourists to visit only every other day.
What matters is the last digit of your license plate. If it ends with an odd number, you cannot drive the coastal road on odd days. If it ends with an even number, a trip on an even day isn't possible. This only applies to private and rental cars. Public transport, taxis, and of course residents can use the coastal road at any time.
So plan your day trip to the most popular hotspots early enough and consider the new regulations. If your hotel or vacation home is directly on the Amalfi Coast, get in touch with your accommodation's contact person and possibly arrange for transfer.
Amalfitana driving bans 2025
The days when traffic will be restricted on the Amalfitana, and you must adhere to the license plate system in 2025 are as follows:
During this time, the following rules apply from 10 AM to 6 PM:
- From April 13 to May 1: every day
- From June 1 to July 31: only Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays
- From August 1 to September 30: every day
- From October 1 to 30: only Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays
- On even days, cars with even last digits on their license plates cannot drive.
- On odd days, cars with odd last digits on their license plates cannot drive.
Most Beautiful Places Along Amalfi Coast
Colorful houses, narrow alleys, and old churches: Along the steep rocky shore on the southern side of the peninsula, many small villages and communities are lined up, some hiding in lush green ravines or perched on high mountain slopes. We have compiled a list of the most scenic places for you.
Former Fishing Village Positano
The most famous place on the Amalfi Coast is undoubtedly Positano. The former quiet fishing village now attracts numerous travelers and influencers - and rightly so! Picturesque colorful houses terraced up the high cliffs create a unique image. Despite the hustle and bustle and increased prices, this place is absolutely worth visiting and a must on your journey along the coast. You can find more reasons for this in our travel report about the popular Positano.
Peaceful Oasis Praiano
After you've gathered enough snapshots for your Instagram account or travel blog, a winding road leads you along the shore to Praiano. Although it's not far away, Praiano is considered an idyllic retreat and offers a quieter, more affordable alternative to bustling Positano. Here, the houses are also built tier-like on a hillside.
Despite the few shops or typical tourist attractions, you should definitely make a stop here. The location at a tip of the coast offers a sensational view of the open sea and Positano.

Fjord Panorama in Furore
Is this location named because it creates a lot of fuss? It would fit, as many bloggers and Instagrammers are attracted here. Particularly the unique Fjord of Furore, spanned by a 30-meter-high bridge, offers an incredible backdrop, and the steep limestone cliffs and the wonderfully turquoise water create a magical picture. Since Furore truly enchanted us, we dedicated an entire article to this picturesque village on the Amalfi Coast.
For those looking for quieter areas, we recommend following the road inland, where wonderful paths through forests and meadows await to be explored. Sounds like a nice change, right?
Nature Paradise Amalfi
Off to Amalfi. This charming, formerly Roman little village is where the Amalfi Coast got its name. It's reason enough to pay a visit. Here you'll also find a large harbor and impressive historical religious sites. The most well-known of these is the majestic Duomo di Sant'Andrea, located in the heart of the city. Further out, in the Valle delle Ferriere, a beautiful valley, you'll find impressive waterfalls and wild rivers. So, sightseeing and adventure go hand in hand - the choice is yours!
Insider Tip Atrani
Just around the corner, accessible by foot through a tunnel, is another quieter spot: Atrani - a real insider tip! Here, life runs at a slower pace, with more locals than tourists, providing a refreshing change for your city strolls and bringing you closer to authentic Italian village life. Stroll through this idyllic town and lose yourself in the maze of winding alleys and stairs. Even though there are few hotels, you'll find plenty of cafes, gelato shops, and restaurants where you can enjoy the distinctive Italian cuisine alongside the locals.
Noble Villas in Ravello
You can even reach this picturesque place on foot from Atrani if you embark on long walks or hikes through fragrant lemon groves. Ravello was once inhabited by many noble families and exudes an artistic charm, attracting noble tourists like the famous composer Richard Wagner as early as the 19th century. Here, the impressive villas with their beautiful, expansive gardens, considered the finest along the coast, are particularly worth seeing. From there, you also have a breathtaking view of the seemingly endless sea, thanks to its high location.
Port City Salerno
Salerno is located at the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast and, with over 130,000 inhabitants, is indeed a proper city. The large harbor in front of Salerno played an important role since ancient times and remains a departure point for numerous boat tours, as well as merchant and cruise ships.
In the city itself, there's much to discover during your visit - from impressive churches and cathedrals to villas and museums. If you need a break after all that sightseeing, you can find a shady spot in one of the lovely gardens and parks. However, an evening stroll along the illuminated promenade can also be quite romantic, depending on how much time you have.
Highlights of the Amalfi Coast: Activities and Excursions
Not only the lively towns but also the diverse mountainous landscape and hidden coves offer exciting activities for you. Below, we'd like to introduce you to our personal highlights of excursions.
Hiking in Wild Nature
Above the villages, a vast, partly lonely rocky landscape stretches along the coast, which can be wonderfully explored on foot. Discover spectacular hiking trails like the famous "Path of the Gods," which leads high above the water to Positano, offering breathtaking views. From Amalfi, you can reach the small village of Agerola-Bomerano; it will take you about two hours for your spectacular hike. Also particularly striking is the Valle dei Mulini, the Mill Valley, where you'll encounter wild-overgrown ruins and waterfalls and rapids during your hike.

Sightseeing with a view: The Historical Villas
The beauty of the Amalfi Coast was recognized early on by numerous noble families, who settled high up in the mountains in magnificent villas. From up here, you can enjoy a dreamlike view over the coast and the open sea while wandering through the lovingly designed flower gardens.
The Villa Rufolo and the Villa Cimbrone are particularly popular, located just ten minutes apart in Ravello, and will enchant you with their panoramic views and romantic parks.
Holy Places Along the Amalfi Coast
For those interested in religious sites and who are in Amalfi, a visit to the Duomo di Sant'Andrea, the Cathedral of Amalfi, is a must. You'll find opulent icons, stunning mosaics, and precious frescoes in this temple supported by stone columns. Also part of the experience is the Chiostro del Paradiso, a medieval cloister with unique architecture: Arab-inspired white arches and columns frame a courtyard filled with palms, where you'll feel transported back in time.
Excursions on the Amalfi Coast
No matter where you are on the coast, tours through the towns, nature reserves, and to the most popular sights are offered almost everywhere. This way, you'll discover many insider tips and gain detailed knowledge about the history and culture of this fascinating region. If you want to see many different places in one day, boat tours are ideal, taking you to the most beautiful coastal locations. This is also a good option if you don't want to deal with the crowded roads and parking options during peak season. Day trips by boat from Positano cost around 65€.
Mangia Italiano: The Popular Italian Cuisine
On your journey through the numerous towns, you'll pass many small and cozy restaurants where you can enjoy typical Italian dishes.
If you want to make the experience a bit more active, there are numerous professional food tours available where your guide will lead you through an unforgettable culinary experience. In cooking classes, you'll also learn about local specialties and delicious dishes up close, and you can showcase your new cooking skills to those who stayed home after your vacation - quite a different souvenir.
The Legendary Amalfi Lemon
Especially well known here is, of course, the unique Amalfi lemon, which you can buy in many markets during their harvest season. The prices for these large, heavy lemons can be eye-catching; with a bit of bad luck, you might end up paying around 5€ each. When you cut them open, you'll find that their skin is significantly thicker and sturdier than that of regular citrus fruits. Therefore, they also make fantastic souvenirs. And if you'd like to use them during your road trip, you can prepare a lemon salad, as both the peel and the white inner layer of the Amalfi lemon are edible.
Recipe for a Quick Salad with Amalfi Lemons
Slice the lemons, including the peel, into very thin slices and arrange them like a carpaccio on a plate. Mix the sweetener with olive oil and drizzle the mixture over the Amalfi lemons. Let it sit and in the meantime, wash and chop the parsley and capers. Spread over the lemons and enjoy slice by slice.
- One half of an organic Amalfi lemon
- 3 tablespoons of olive oil
- A bit of cane sugar or maple syrup
- Parsley
- Capers
The Most Beautiful Beaches on the Amalfi Coast
After so much sightseeing, it's time to unwind - and where better to do that than on a beautiful dream beach? The Amalfi Coast has some of the best, and now we'd like to introduce you to the finest.
Idyllic Pebble Beach Fornillo
If you want to start your Italian vacation in lively Positano, you'll find one of the most popular pebble beaches right here at Fornillo Beach. Like nearly all beaches along the coast, this one requires a few steps down to the water - but the journey is worth it, especially for the crystal-clear waters and the phenomenal view. Plenty of loungers and tasty, affordable restaurants await you to relax after the descent. A great alternative to the main beach of the town!
Charming Cove Bagni d'Arienzo
The enchanting pebble cove Bagni d'Arienzo can be found on the first coastal stretch between Positano and Praiano, below the Amalfitana. Enjoy the view of the turquoise sea, framed by rugged, green-covered cliffs, as you settle onto the terrace of the restaurant right on the beach or relax on one of the sun loungers.
Since this beautiful cove is the first stop for swimming after Positano, it can get particularly crowded during the peak season - just arrive early to enjoy some peace and secure a comfortable spot.
Endless Sandy Beach Maiori
In Maiori, you will find not only the longest beach but also the only true sandy beach of the Amalfi Coast. This small town lies at the foot of a rocky slope and certainly ranks as one of the most beautiful relaxation spots in the region. Stroll leisurely through the narrow alleys or along the pier at the harbor, from which you can also take trips to the holiday island of Capri. But for now, you can sit comfortably in the fine sand and enjoy your beach day.
Majestic Spiaggia di Atrani
Like the town, the beach at Atrani is dreamily beautiful and yet much calmer, even if many loungers line up here during summer. The beach stretches right in the town center below the street, which is supported by impressive tall arches. Look forward to turquoise water, gentle waves, and a great view of the quaint town!
Is the Amalfi Coast really as beautiful as everyone says?
✔️ The clear answer is: Yes.
The coastal towns and beaches are indeed a dream for anyone who loves Italian villages and enjoys wandering through picturesque alleys. You can really find good pasta and delicious gelato at every corner.
However, it's not quite as flawless as it seems on Instagram. Especially during the high season, it gets very crowded here - so try to avoid August if possible, as then not only tourists but also many Italians travel south for their summer holidays. This drives up the prices for hotels and vacation rentals, of course.
We recommend the optimal travel time from September to mid-October. Then accommodations become cheaper again, and it's not as hot anymore. This way, you can undertake relaxing hikes without getting sunstroke and can find a table again in very popular restaurants.
Driving here isn't a great pleasure, so we recommend renting the smallest car available to you. This will make it easier to find parking.
Overall, you can look forward to a truly wonderful time along the Italian coast, we can promise you that. You'll see the most if you take a cruise through the Mediterranean!
