At the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), you can view art and numerous artifacts from Islamic culture across several floors, and you will be amazed at the diversity and impressiveness of the exhibits.

The architecture will also captivate you. This museum was designed by the same architect known for the glass pyramid in front of the Louvre in Paris, Ieoh Ming Pei. The building was inspired by the Sabil, an ablution fountain in Ahmad Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo dating from the 9th century. Additionally, you will have a fantastic view of the Doha skyline from here. Definitely one of the many experiences you should have during your trip to Qatar.

Vacation Guru Expert Tip from Maren, Director of Content Strategy: 'If you're looking for a good restaurant here, I recommend Boho Social. This restaurant is a true highlight for colorful Instagram photos. The decor is very photogenic, and from the terrace, you have a great view of the skyline and the beach. The ambiance here is really pleasant, especially in the evening when the sun is setting, and locals gather for tea or coffee to wind down the day.'

Souq Waqif is the epitome of Arab bazaar culture. Here, you can buy everything from cooking utensils to everyday items, spices, and clothing. If you're in Doha, a visit to this souk is a must.

Everywhere you hear the chatter of merchants, and in small dimly lit shops, you'll find many surprises. Souq Waqif has many cafés and restaurants, though finding your way among the many alleys can be a challenge. If you want to escape the day's heat, come to the bazaar in the evening - between 7 PM and 11 PM, there's the most to see.

Our note: There is also a separate section in Souq Waqif where various animals are for sale. Unfortunately, the standards of care there do not match those you may be used to from, for example, Germany. You have the option to skip this part of the market and instead quietly explore the remaining colorful areas.

  • Vacation Guru Tip for Restaurants: Parisa. Really delicious Persian cuisine in a unique setting. The interior is very colorful and photogenic, featuring a fountain and many impressive seating areas and private rooms.
  • Best Time to Visit: In the evening, it gets crowded as seemingly all the residents of the city stroll through the alleys, sit in cafés and restaurants, and observe the hustle and bustle in the streets. Only Friday mornings are very quiet.

If you're in the area, a visit to the trendy neighborhood of Msheireb, right next to Souq Waqif, is worthwhile. Here you'll find more than 100 apartments & shops, plenty of cafés, and restaurants. Everything is very modern, and as you stroll along the streets, you will occasionally come across small market stands where you can buy some cool stuff.

Here you can find French pastries, stands with bread and baguettes, a small farmers' market, and more. Music plays from speakers and there are benches everywhere where you can sit and observe the activity surrounding you. If you're after a comfortable stroll, some shopping, and good coffee, you're in the right place.

  • Best Time to Visit: During the day and evenings. For example, for breakfast at Cue Café.

Doha's waterfront promenade, the Corniche, is seven kilometers long - there is a running path, a palm-lined green space with water features, and plenty of space to take a stroll along the stunning skyline of the city. Along the way, you will pass the Emir's palace, the Burj Doha, and many other landmarks of the city.

One place of exceptional beauty is the inland sea of Chaur al-Udaid. Only about 60 kilometers from Doha, in the southeast of the emirate, you can admire one of Qatar's most impressive landscapes here. Chaur al-Udaid has already been recognized by UNESCO as a nature reserve with its own ecosystem, and is one of the few places where the sea extends deep into the desert.

You can only reach this idyllic spot through the dunes, as there is no road leading here. It's best to plan an excursion here and let yourself be enchanted by the scenic beauty, which along with a unique wildlife offers fantastic photo opportunities, especially at sunset.

Vacation Guru Experience Report: A Trip into the Desert of Qatar

Maren from our content team ventured into the desert of Qatar: 'During our stay in Qatar, we couldn't miss the opportunity to drive into the desert with our guide Ammar. We passed by huge gas and oil industrial plants in the city of Mesaieed, where a separate city has been built for workers to avoid long commute times to Doha and especially to prevent accidents. Each family lives in their own house, somewhat resembling a suburban neighborhood in Germany.','Upon arriving in the desert, Ammar first lets air out of the tires of his jeep, as you need less pressure on the sand. Only a few other drivers are around; in the summer, it's generally much too hot here. However, Ammar is an experienced guide who knows exactly what he and his vehicle can handle. 'Actually,' he tells me, 'it's better here now than in winter because now we have the desert all to ourselves. In summer, you have to be careful because everyone comes from the city to the desert and races up the dunes. That can get a bit risky.'

We've been out here for about an hour until we stop by the sea. 'You can see Saudi Arabia over there' - Ammar points to a strip of land on the horizon. We dart up and down a few dunes before we slowly make our way back. There is an air station right at the entrance to the desert where you can re-inflate your tires before heading back to the road.'

If you're in Doha, don't miss the chance to venture out into the desert. With an experienced guide, you can cruise to deserted beaches, climb kilometers-long dunes, slide down steep slopes, and feel the desert wind on your face. It's a unique experience that continually reminds us of how small we are in our extraordinary nature.

Did you know:

The artificial island is called 'The Pearl' for a reason. The Qatari people are historically known for their pearl diving - long before the economy boomed due to oil and gas discoveries, natural pearls from the sea were the primary source of income for the state.

The Pearl is only about 330 meters from the mainland, connected by the Pearl Boulevard. This artificial island is an architectural and landscaping masterpiece that you can certainly visit. There's a marina with chic luxury yachts, various shopping malls, galleries, and many more entertainment options. In the evenings, the streets here become a stage for young Qataris in their luxury sports cars - you will see AMG models, RS versions, and M variants from major German car brands are more than common here. Car enthusiasts will definitely have their fun here.

Sit in one of the chic cafés, enjoy a smoothie, and watch the people at the so-called 'Arabian Riviera' - it's truly a nice place to be.

Qatar is Surprisingly Diverse

Every visit to an unknown country, every touch with a foreign culture takes you further and makes you aware of how many countries, people, and adventures are still waiting for us all. Right here in Qatar, you can connect with so many people from diverse nations and cultures within a few hours.

In restaurants, shops, and hotels, you'll meet many Asians, Europeans, and Arabs - and everyone speaks great English. This makes it easy to strike up conversations and quickly meet fascinating people. So, if you are considering exploring a new Arab country, add Qatar to your bucket list. You will soon realize that the state has much more to offer than you might think. Make your own picture - with a stopover in Doha.
