The stereotype of the rainy season assumes that it rains all day, leaving you with no choice but to hide in your hotel room. However, this is often not the case. Most of the time, the rain passes after one or two hours. What remains is a well-watered flora and beautifully clear air. Soon, the sun comes back out and the sand dries up. Okay, I admit: it doesn't always go this smoothly. In more remote areas, severe downpours can result in power outages. Excursions may have to be interrupted, and if you get caught out in the rain, you might find yourself sheltering under a covered seating area in a park. But make the best of it!

Of course, it's clear that someone booking a vacation to a distant, exotic country wants to get something out of it. Instead of lounging on a paradise beach under palm trees sipping from coconuts, waiting for the next downpour under a tent is not quite what one imagines.

When is the Rainy Season in Southeast Asia?

  • Thailand Vacation: In the Land of Smiles, the rainy season generally runs from June to October. There are showers for one to two hours a day, and flooding can occur in rural areas. It has a hot climate with very high humidity (up to 90%).
  • Vietnam Vacation: Vietnam is the wettest country in the region. The rainy season roughly extends from May to October, meaning that short but heavy downpours can occur here as well. The year-round tropical monsoon climate is influenced by the Southeast monsoon (which brings the rainy season) from May to September and the Northeast monsoon (which is drier) from October to April.
  • Similarly in Sri Lanka: When the Southwest monsoon is active from May to September, the Northeast enjoys sunshine. This is reversed with the Northeast monsoon from December to March.
  • Malaysia and Singapore: These beautiful countries offer summery temperatures around 30°C year-round, with high humidity. In terms of rainy or monsoon season, the climate zones on the East Coast differ from those on the West Coast.
  • Philippines: The rainy season in the Philippines falls between June and November. However, since the country consists of around 7,000 islands, variations can occur. Particularly during monsoon times, severe storms and even typhoons, especially from August to October, have become worse in recent years.
  • Indonesia: Climate-wise, Indonesia likely has one of the most diverse environments! Because the islands are quite dispersed, it's hard to generalize about a rainy season. This is also due to the fact that showers can occur practically all year round, regardless of where you are. A popular destination is Bali, where the rainy season lasts from November to March.

When is the Rainy Season in the North and South Atlantic?

You will probably feel the same way: The beaches of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic, and the Cape Verde Islands must be loved. Fine sand, vast azure sea, and tropical warmth with gentle breezes. During the local summer, which only slightly differs in temperature, it tends to rain more often - usually not for long, but heavily.

  • The Cape Verde Islands offer a special case when it comes to climate. Despite the tropical climate, the island of Sal has long been considered the driest of all. This has changed slightly: In recent years, there have also been heavy rainfall here.

When is the Rainy Season in the Seychelles and the Maldives?

The islands in the Indian Ocean are famous for their stunning landscapes. Especially vacations in the Seychelles and the Maldives are very popular and chosen throughout the year. The weather on both island groups is shaped by monsoon winds.

  • In the Seychelles, it is consistently warm, and during the rainy season, there are short, heavy showers with occasionally strong thunderstorms. The period from April to November is the most pleasant climate in the Seychelles. During the transition between the rainy and dry seasons, the trade winds alternate, which can often result in calm, oppressive, and very humid conditions with humidity rising up to 80%.
  • The Maldives weather is also determined by two monsoons: The Northeast monsoon from November to April is generally dry, while the Southwest monsoon is wet. During this time, there are heavy tropical showers, and it may rain for one or several days.

When is the Rainy Season in South America?

  • When you think of South America, you might not think of heavy rains, flooded streets, and high humidity. The stereotype is that of a dry southern continent, with mountains, deserts, and hot temperatures. But don't be mistaken. Even if there aren't really severe downpours everywhere, there is almost always a time of year when it becomes a bit uncomfortable. The skies are overcast, it is cool and windy.
  • However, on the vast continent of South America, you have an extensive selection, and there will definitely be a region where the rainy season is absolutely worthwhile. In the Peruvian Andes, for example, the rainy season also means summer - just like in many other countries. After a brief rain shower, the sun usually comes back out. On the Galapagos Islands, the rainy season is considered a good travel time, as despite the rain showers, these months are sunnier, and wildlife observations are more likely.

When is the Rainy Season in Oceania?

  • What is the weather like south of the equator? Australia is the driest continent on average, New Zealand is partly tropical, and it can rain quite a bit there. During the Australian summer (November to March), only the southern part of the country and the southern island of New Zealand have favorable travel weather. However, in the Australian Outback during the summer, it gets so hot that traveling there is not recommended. In the northeastern part of the country, particularly in Queensland, severe rainfall and flooding frequently occur in January and February. During this time, many roads can be impassable. However, the rain usually doesn't last longer than an hour.

  • Fiji, Tahiti, or the Cook Islands - the South Seas are synonymous for us with a dreamy vacation right in paradise! In our dreams, we imagine the miles of white sandy beaches with palms gently swaying in the sea breeze and a turquoise sea whose waves gently lull us to sleep at night. But there is also a less optimal travel season here. When the rainy season hits the South Sea islands, in addition to the showers, there can also be storms, especially early in the year. Generally, the rainy season in the South Seas lasts from November to March. High temperatures and humidity are also prevalent on the islands during this time. Conversely, from April to October is considered the ideal travel time.

Is It Worth Traveling During the Rainy Season? A Conclusion

The rainy season rarely means that your entire vacation has to be canceled! In many vacation spots, there are just short, heavy showers during the day, and afterwards, the sun comes back out. In other countries, however, the rainy season can be serious: Severe thunderstorms from typhoons or hurricanes could literally ruin your vacation. So make sure to learn in advance how the rainy season might unfold at your desired destination and what the average weather is like during the planned travel period. And if your entire vacation does end up being rained out, the only solution is to pack your rubber boots and umbrella, or use the time to explore museums or read your travel guide in a nice café.
