San Francisco Tips
A Cool City with Unique Flair
Come with me to the legendary city of California, where the streets could hardly be hillier and the weather could hardly be crazier. I will guide you to the coolest places and show you what else should be on your itinerary besides the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz!
Anyone who has been to San Francisco will never forget this city, as it is something truly special! At least that's how I felt after my visit. You can't just pigeonhole San Francisco because there are a thousand things to discover in this wonderful city. The streets have a unique vibe that immediately puts you in a good mood and gives you the feeling: 'You are free and can achieve anything you want!'
My San Francisco Tips
Once-in-a-Lifetime Highlights
Getting around in San Francisco is usually quite easy. The streets are set up in the typical U.S. block system, so you can usually plan your route in advance. Walking in San Francisco is worth it - even if you might feel a bit old-fashioned by consulting a map. I managed very well with it and didn't have to ask for directions at every corner. If you ever do get lost, that's no problem; most people in San Francisco will happily give you directions if you're unsure - it must be the California sunshine! Alternatively, you can also get an overview of the locations of the various highlights on the following map.
Exploring the Streets of San Francisco
Cable Cars - Pure Nostalgia
Getting from A to B can be done by bus, train, or the city's famous cable cars, as driving in the hilly metropolis is certainly no fun. For me, riding the cable cars was much more than just transportation; it's an additional sightseeing tour. Choose a nice route and let the wind whip through your hair as you traverse the hilly streets along the tracks. If you're lucky, you might even snag a spot on the step and have the best view of the streets. Just be sure not to forget to hold on tight! A ride on one of the rolling landmarks of the city costs $7, and a day pass is $21.
Shopping at Union Square
Cable car stations are actually located all over San Francisco, so you can easily hop on and off, such as at the station near Union Square. Here you will find the shopping hub of the city, as well as the main train station. All types of shops line the important shopping streets of San Francisco, from expensive labels to more affordable fashion chains. If you're in town to shop, feel free to linger a bit longer and let yourself be overwhelmed by a huge selection of brands. After all, you don't want to come back home empty-handed!
The Hippie District Haight-Ashbury
Considerably more alternative, but definitely a beautiful place to stroll through small shops and second-hand stores filled with quirky items, is the Haight-Ashbury district, where legends like Janis Joplin once roamed. During the 70s, this neighborhood was the center of the Flower Power movement, and even today you'll find brightly painted facades, quirky shops, and the occasional shady character. Don't be surprised if a strangely sweet, familiar smell wafts your way; most hippies here don't really care much for rules. This neighborhood is definitely a must-visit for anyone wanting to delve deeper into San Francisco's hippie past.
Golden Gate Park
From here, you'll be in no time at Golden Gate Park, which even has direct access to the vast beach. This massive green heart of the city is even larger than Central Park in New York. There are several museums, a Japanese tea garden, artificial lakes, and waterfalls, and even a small herd of bison. The park is especially the perfect place to relax in the summer - don't miss out on it!
Culinary Treasures in San Francisco
You will definitely find great food options in San Francisco. The city has practically invented the term multicultural, and in the areas of Chinatown and Little Italy, you can enjoy wonderful specialties from far-off Asia and Italy. Chinatown is not only worth a visit for its excellent restaurants; it's also a unique place where you can completely forget you're in the western U.S. as you stroll past Chinese shops and colorful decorations adorning the buildings, evoking an Eastern vibe. The settlement in San Francisco is not only the largest 'Chinatown' outside China but also the oldest in North America. Here you'll learn a lot about the culture and history of the Asians who have lived here for generations. Little Italy has also been a part of the city for years and spreads Italian charm, especially in the evening when people sit outside at tables enjoying red wine and pasta specialties to wind down their evening. A beautiful area full of cafés and bars that invite you to linger!
Sushi, Veggies, and Fantastic Desserts
But you can find great specialties not only in Chinatown and Little Italy. All over the city, there are small and large restaurants that attract numerous customers with their unique creations.
Breakfast Delights
For instance, at Sweet Maple, you'll find everything your breakfast heart desires. Whether you want a hearty breakfast with potatoes and sandwiches topped with bacon and eggs, or prefer sweet pancakes sprinkled with berries and powdered sugar, you'll find everything you need for a great start to the day. A travel guru tip: Arrive early, as the line often stretches out onto the street by 10 a.m.!
Top-Notch Sushi
If you're in Castro, then treat yourself to delicious sushi. At Takara Sushi, you have the opportunity to enjoy different Japanese specialties and be pampered by the friendly staff. Be sure to order the Volcano Roll, the best dish I've eaten in San Francisco.
Artfully Crafted Veggies
If you prefer dining with a view, you should check out Greens. The vegetarian restaurant is a bit pricier, but it offers a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge. If you're hanging out in the Haight-Ashbury district, you can stop by VeganBurg for a satisfying meal with delicious vegan burgers. They also offer seaweed fries and homemade lemonade.
Garlic Galore
The Stinking Rose also has its own creations to offer, as the name suggests: All dishes are infused with garlic, really all of them! Whether it's pasta, steak, or the ice cream served for dessert - everything contains garlic, and it tastes great! To find this extraordinary restaurant, you'll probably just have to follow your nose.
Dreamy Desserts
What a good meal never lacks is a delicious dessert. Luckily, Baked Bear serves the best dessert in the city. Ice cream in sandwich form, sprinkled with M&Ms, colorful sprinkles, and whipped cream. Yummy!
Where to Party in San Francisco
In general, San Francisco's nightlife is very diverse and exciting. If you prefer something a bit more upscale, you can mingle in the trendy bars of the Financial District and Marina District. Even in the SOMA District, you won't get bored with so many clubs, and bars and restaurants are open until the early morning hours. I particularly enjoyed the bars and clubs in the Castro district. Here in the gay neighborhood, the atmosphere is relaxed and open-minded, the people are incredibly creative and alternative, and the parties are as varied as nowhere else. But keep in mind that entry to clubs and the consumption of alcohol are permitted only for those aged 21 and older in the U.S. So be sure to have your ID ready when you're out on the town at night!

Highlights You Shouldn't Miss
Actually, all of San Francisco is one big highlight. However, I've picked out a few for you that may be tourist hotspots but are still cool to see.
Lombard Street: The Crookedest Street in the World
When you head towards the waterfront and navigate through San Francisco's steep streets, you might find yourself breathless, as you won't walk many elevation meters in any other city! Steep and especially curvy is Lombard Street, known as the crookedest street in the world, which is traversed by thousands of visitors each year. But don't worry; you can also walk along the winding road and make your way to Fisherman's Wharf, which is very nearby.
Fisherman's Wharf
This is one place you absolutely shouldn't miss! If you have never been here, felt the rough coastal wind, and watched the sea lions at Pier 39 lounging about, then you've truly missed something! Today, Fisherman's Wharf is one of the main tourist destinations, and as you stroll through the harbor, the sounds of street musicians greet you from all directions. It's truly a unique place!
Alcatraz: 'The Rock'
By the way, from here, ferries depart to the legendary prison Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay. At Pier 33, you can obtain your tickets for a trip to the 'Rock of Despair' or 'The Rock'; however, you should arrange for your tickets in advance, as Alcatraz tours can sometimes be booked out months in advance due to the many visitors. Even so, I would say that a visit is definitely worthwhile, as the stories surrounding the former most secure prison in the country will stay with you for weeks. See for yourself the place that became the scene of spectacular escape attempts and where criminals like mob boss Al Capone served their sentences!
Sailing into the Sunset
Another tip from me is to take a little sailing trip through the San Francisco Bay. You'll set sail immediately from Pier 39, right by the sea lions. It's a unique experience in my opinion, especially if you book a sunset tour that sails past the pier, Alcatraz Island, and the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset. Snacks, drinks, and unique photo opportunities are usually included in the price, for example, with the Adventure Cat Sailing Charters.
A Little Break at Ghirardelli Square
Before you let yourself be lulled by the sunset over the San Francisco Bay, you should definitely make a stop at the famous Ghirardelli Square right by the harbor. The former chocolate factory now sells original chocolate sundaes and everything else that makes sweet-toothed people drool. An ideal place for a little break in the in-house café, where true delicacies made of chocolate and cream are served. By the way, a little bird told me that you might receive a few free samples at the world-renowned chocolate manufacturer's shop. Alternatively, you can relax on the large lawn in front of the old factory or enjoy the view of the Golden Gate Bridge from the promenade, which is simply spectacular here - if the weather is good!
The Golden Gate Bridge
Yes, you've probably been waiting for this, and I certainly don't want to withhold it from you, as the Golden Gate Bridge is arguably the most famous landmark of the city. Of course, as a visitor to San Francisco, you must show a photo of the famous bridge after your trip! From the harbor, you can already catch a good view of the bridge, but I believe: It's simply a must that you not only photograph it but also cross it if possible. If you rent a car, you can visit the various viewpoints on both sides of the Golden Gate Bridge, where you will often have to compete for a parking spot. Particularly sporty individuals can walk across it. A tip from me: Rent a bike and ride across the bridge to the little town of Sausalito on the other side. You'll capture the best views of the bay, stay flexible, and can meander through the streets and the charming harbor of Sausalito afterwards. It's best to start your tour early in the morning, as San Francisco can be a bit unpredictable when it comes to weather. To avoid the famous fog in San Francisco Bay, head out in the morning - then nothing should stand in the way of a perfect photo of the Golden Gate Bridge!
Visit the Painted Ladies of San Francisco
If you're looking for more postcard-worthy shots for your photo album, you definitely shouldn't miss the so-called Painted Ladies at Alamo Square. From a little hill, you'll have the perfect view of the famous Victorian houses that appear in the series 'Full House' and have become the city's showcase with their colorful facades. Behind them, the San Francisco skyline stretches out in all its glory.
Twin Peaks: Experience the City's Magic from Above
For me, one of the best places to wrap up your stay in this beautiful yet quirky city is the Twin Peaks in the Twin Peaks Natural Area. The two famous hills in the heart of San Francisco are the perfect viewpoint over the city, and especially one of the best spots to watch the sunset. The easiest way to get here is by car; drive along Twin Peak Boulevard to Christmas Tree Point, the viewpoint on one of the hills. Since parking can quickly become a hassle in the afternoon, I advise you to travel to the hills very early in the morning so you can experience the sunrise over the city! If you're looking for a convenient way to explore San Francisco, I recommend the sightseeing tours from Big Bus Tours. Ride in stylish open-top double-decker buses through the city and comfortably experience all the attractions in San Francisco in a short amount of time. It's best to buy your tickets in advance online, as it will save you a lot of money!
Muir Woods - Enchanting Nature
Make sure to drive about 15 miles north over the Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods National Monument in one day. This forest is so impressive and mystical that you won't want to miss it. Here, you will find the gigantic redwoods that are so tall, you'll feel like they reach up to the sky. When you arrive at the parking lot, you'll pay $10 for a day pass at the entrance and can then explore the hiking trails leisurely at your own pace. It's emptier in the morning than in the afternoon, and the further you get from the entrance, the quieter it becomes. A magical place!
San Francisco - The City of a Thousand Impressions
Eccentric, lively, and beautiful - that's how I experienced San Francisco with its unique vibe during my visit. This city definitely belongs to my favorites and is sure to captivate you too! Who knows, maybe you won't have to dream about it for long and you'll soon be wandering through San Francisco in your ripped jeans. If you've been here before, please tell me about your favorite spots in the city in the comments!
