Our journey begins in Kazakhstan at Lake Kaindy, which was formed in a strange way. In 1911, a massive landslide triggered by an earthquake blocked a gorge, leading to the formation of a dam. Where rainwater accumulated, the bright blue Lake Kaindy was eventually created.

The dead spruce trunks make this place mystical. However, the natural wonders of the country have even more to offer, and we have dedicated a separate article to Kazakhstan. Check it out and be amazed by the diversity of wild beauty.

The Dark Hedges in Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, the trees along this mystical road seem to reach out and hold anyone who walks through. The Dark Hedges were planted by a family in Ballymoney in the 18th century and continue to fascinate people from around the world. It is so captivating that it has served as a filming location for Game of Thrones, the world's most popular series. If you want to combine a visit to this natural phenomenon with a short trip through Northern Ireland, you will find more inspiration in our travel magazine.

Horsetail Fall in California

As if the Yosemite National Park weren't already enough to amaze you with breathtaking views awaiting at every corner, it enchants its visitors with a very special phenomenon. Those who have something as special as this do not show it to everyone and certainly not all year round!

If you want to experience this unique natural phenomenon, you should plan your trip well and visit the park in February. Only then, and only under good weather conditions, does Horsetail Fall show its most beautiful side. In the light of the setting sun, the waterfall shines in bright shades of orange, yellow, and red, creating the illusion of hot lava or liquid gold flowing over the cliff. It's no surprise that Horsetail Fall is also nicknamed Firefall.

Guru Tip: The USA is full of natural phenomena that you can marvel at in various states across the country. Discover where to find the most beautiful national parks in the USA in our article.

Gateway to Hell in Turkmenistan

As you wander through the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan, you will spot something on the horizon that you have probably never seen before. Before you lies a huge burning crater: the so-called 'Gateway to Hell'. This hellish gate or the crater of Derweze did not form by chance: While searching for gas, the ground collapsed into an underground cave due to drilling. To stop the release of toxic gas, the crater, which is 70 meters in diameter, was set on fire - and the fire has not gone out since. Sounds crazy, right? Due to the vast amounts of natural gas and particularly high temperatures, the hell gate is also one of the most dangerous places in the world.

Dragon Trees in Yemen

In Yemen, on Socotra Island, Mother Nature has come up with something very special. This strange growth, which to the untrained eye looks like a tree, is actually not a tree at all but belongs to the family of asparagus plants. Why? Because it does not have secondary thickening growth. These trees can grow up to twelve meters high and are only found on this island in the Arabian Sea.

Figure 8 Pools in Australia

The almost perfectly shaped eights in the Royal National Park in Sydney, Australia, were not created by humans, but are the result of still unexplained natural processes.

The natural pools attract thousands of fascinated visitors each year, who even attempt to swim in the Figure 8 Pools along the rocky coast. However, this can be life-threatening, as many tourists grossly underestimate the strength of the waves and currents. After numerous injuries, official warnings against swimming in the pools are now in place. On the website of the National Parks in Australia, you can even see when the risk of waves - and therefore injuries - is high or low. But if you want to be on the safe side, it's best not to enter the rock pools at all; instead, admire this natural phenomenon from a safe distance.

Dallol Volcano in Ethiopia

Upon arriving in the volcanic landscape of Ethiopia, not a nose hair is likely to survive - because here, pure acid bubbles up from the ground, combined with a smell of sulfur that is overwhelming. Those who didn't skip chemistry in school know how bad it can smell.

Due to the saline plains and hot groundwater, minerals are deposited on the surface and gases escape, creating this phenomenon. Despite the harsh stench, Dallol Volcano definitely offers an incredible sight, but you will likely only see it in photos, as this geothermal area is located 90 meters below sea level and experiences yearly temperatures well over 30° Celsius.

Incredible! With an average annual temperature of 34.7° Celsius, the Dallol Volcano is hotter than any other place on Earth.

Kawah Ijen Volcano on Java

The next natural phenomenon can be found on the Indonesian island of Java. At the Kawah Ijen volcano, the lava seems to glow blue at night - but could that really be? The term Blue Lava is well-established; however, the lava from the Kawah Ijen Volcano has the same red-orange color as all the others. So what makes the flowing magma appear bluish?

During an eruption, not only does lava flow to the surface, but a large amount of sulfur gases also escape under high pressure and at temperatures of up to 600° Celsius. When these sulfur gases come into contact with oxygen and are ignited by lava, the sulfur burns, producing the blue flames. Unfortunately, this effect is only visible at night.

Lake Natron in Tanzania

Lake Natron is located in northern Tanzania near the border with Kenya. Ornithologists appreciate the lake particularly for its diverse bird populations, especially the population of dwarf flamingos that attracts thousands of visitors annually.

The eerie touch of the lake is initially due to the Ol Doinyo Lengai, a volcano that is the only one in the world to produce lava that is mostly sodium carbonate and is dissolved in the adjacent lake. If an animal dies or accidentally comes into contact with the sodium carbonate water, it leads to calcification, preserving the body for eternity. A creepy and painful thought, but the result looks quite impressive, don't you think?

Great Blue Hole in Belize

Basically, the Great Blue Hole is nothing more than an underwater sinkhole that is usually elliptical or funnel-shaped. To be more precise, it is not just a simple sinkhole but an underground cave system that formed through erosion and was flooded by the rise in sea levels. This makes the Blue Hole in Belize one of the most amazing and beautiful natural phenomena, as well as a true diving paradise. As experienced divers, you even have the chance to explore and experience this natural phenomenon for yourself. When in life does such an opportunity arise? Off to the nature paradise of Belize!
