Does this unique natural phenomenon really exist?
When thinking of Mauritius, stunning images of paradise beaches and azure blue seas immediately come to mind. But have you ever heard of an underwater waterfall?
Underwater Waterfall in Mauritius
Real or surreal?
Fascinating Phenomenon
Located at the southwestern tip of Mauritius, right in front of the famous Le Morne Brabant Mountain, one can witness an incredible natural phenomenon from the air - the mysterious underwater waterfall. As if the bright turquoise sea, which later transitions into a deep blue, weren't impressive enough, it seems as though the Indian Ocean is swallowing tons of water.
A waterfall that leaves you speechless and is unmatched worldwide. The first question that many might ask here is probably the same: Does such a thing actually exist? The answer is 'sort of'. Yes, we see this breathtaking waterfall and the images are not fabricated, but what looks like an underwater waterfall is actually an optical illusion.
What it's all about...
How does this work, you may ask? It's quite simple: the massive water currents of the Indian Ocean are so powerful that they wash sand away from the southwestern coast of Mauritius and into the deeper regions of the ocean. This creates, in our eyes, this fascinating image of an underwater waterfall. Incredible, right?
