Photo Story: Coconut Grove Beachfront Cottages Kitty

Coconut Grove Beachfront Cottages in Matei on Taveuni Island in Fiji is surrounded by mango trees and coconut palms.

Though I was there with a small group just for lunch and didn’t actually get to spend the night, I felt like I’d arrived almost at the end of the earth.

Owner Ronna Goldstein told us she left her high heels and briefcase behind and came here with her boyfriend to live in paradise. He’s gone, but happily, she’s still here.

People come here to kayak, snorkel, and mountain bike, but I prefer lounging in a hammock, wading in the warm water, or strolling the white-sand beach.

The restaurant is in the lodge, up from the bures (cabins).

It has comfortable communal seating for guests, and I dined here on a well-dressed organic Greek salad, crispy Asian spring rolls, and homemade cookies.

A small gift boutique without walls adjoins, purveying some lovely sulus (sarongs) and jewellery.

It was here that I met the golden kitty Popsicle, who likes to nap in a souvenir kava bowl awaiting purchase.

In this photo I captured of him, he looks as if he’s just feeling the effects of finishing off the dregs.

This dreamy resort is on my been there, done that, want-to-do-it-again list and the magic of Popsicle is just one of many reasons.

Taveuni is the third-largest island in Fiji, after Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, with a total land area of 434 square kilometres.

The cigar-shaped island, a massive shield volcano which rises from the floor of the Pacific Ocean, is situated 6.5 kilometres to the east of Vanua Levu, across the Somosomo Strait.

It belongs to the Vanua Levu Group of islands and is part of Fiji’s Cakaudrove Province within the Northern Division.

The island had a population of around 19,000, some 75 percent of them indigenous Fijians, at the 2015 census.

Taveuni has abundant flora and is known as the ‘Garden Island of Fiji’.

It is a popular tourist destination. Tourists are attracted to the excellent diving opportunities, prolific bird life, bushwalks and waterfalls.

Coconut Grove Beachfront Cottages in Matei on Taveuni Island in Fiji is a property that combines visiting village and sitting around the kava bowl listening to them play some sweet island ukulele tunes and the luxury of returning to the comforts of your private beachfront cottage.
